Biography

Nathaniel Harrison II, eldest son, who inherited Brandon and built the present house. Nathaniel Harrison, of Brandon, was like his father a prominent man in the colony and a member of the Council of State. He married first Mary, daughter of Colonel Cole Digges (1692-1744), and secondly, Lucy, widow of Henry Fitzhugh and daughter of Honorable Robert Carter, of Corotoman. His first wife was the mother of his eldest son and the heir of Brandon, Benjamin Harrison, whose portrait is among those upon the walls.

  • We the Subscribers have set one third of all the slaves & Stock in St. Paul's Parish belonging to Estate of Colo. HENRY FITZHUGH deced .. set apart for Mrs. LUCY HARRISON'S Dower ..
  • We also by Agreement with Colo. NATHL. HARRISON and Lucy his wife assign 732 acres of land out of the whole 1797 acres the said 732 acres to be laid off as Followeth Beginning at the upper corner of said land on the River bank running Easterly down to River .. thence South for which said 732 acres of land Nathaniel Harrison and Lucy have agreed to quirt their thirds of the mill part and their thirds of the profits of the Mill except to be sold free ..
  • The names of the Slaves are Vizt (27 named) -. horses, cattle & sheep and also her thirds of all other estate in Stafford County where the Law gives it to her .. 22d August 1748.

  • “Benjamin Harrison, Esq. of Surry Co. and Nathaniel Harrison, Esq. of Stafford Co. to James Belches and John Peter, merchants of Surry Co. £20. 300 acres of land and a water grist mill in Southwarke Parish on Birchen Swamp (being land devised to them by the will of their father, Nathaniel Harrison, Esq. dated 15 Dec 1726).

Will

Will of Nathaniel Harrison of Brandon in the Parish of Martins Brandon and County of Prince George, dated the 1st day of August, 1799 [SIC], and proved on March 13, 1792. I give use and occupation of my Plantation known by the name of Church Pasture Quarter to my daughter, Eliza. Fitzhugh for her life or widowhood, with remainder after her death or marriage whichever first to son, Benjamin Harrison. To son, Benjamin Harrison, all rest and residue. Son, Benjamin Harrison, named as Executor. Witnesses were William Curtis, Richardson Miller, William Milbery and Turner Jackson.

1931. "Brandon, James River, Prince George County, Virginia. Built ca. 1730 by Nathaniel Harrison II and for two centuries the home of the Harrison family. The central block connecting the two older wings is supposed to have been designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1789 upon his return from France." 8x10 inch acetate negative by Frances Benjamin Johnston.
