About Mary Maugridge
Not the daughter of Richard Melton, of Jamestown & Margaret Ross, of Scotland
Despite what various sources might say, Mary Milton/Melton was not the daughter of John Milton the poet. The records given for her all have her born in Devonshire and married in Devonshire; Milton was born and died in London (though he spent his college years in Cambridge), and his daughter Mary was born in 1648 in London. Moreover, Milton published Paradise Lost in 1667, about the time that Mary Milton/Melton married John Maugridge; Mary the daughter of the poet had been up until that time involved in helping with the manuscript. We have no record of John Milton's daughter being married.
Mary was born in Bradnich, Devonshire, England, Great Britain 1647. Mary was the daughter of Mr. Milton and Miss. Mary died AUG 1697 in Bradninch, Devonshire, England, at 50 years of age. She was christened in Clayhanger, Devon, England, 20 SEP 1646. [SIC: if we don’t know her parents, how do we know her christening?]
Was Mary the daughter of the poet John Milton?

Notes
- The parents of Mary Milton have not been determined. She was identified as the wife of John Mogridge and the mother of Mary Mogridge (Maugridge) Boone in the genealogy of the Boone family prepared by her grandson James Boone in 1788
- "Mary (daughter of John Milton the poet & Mary Powell) is known to have survived to adulthood. Though the date of her death is not known, it is known that she married one John Maugridge. They became the parents of a daughter, Mary Milton Maugridge in 1669. This grandaughter of John Milton died on February 2, 1740 in Berks County, Pennsylvania"
- The marriage of John Mogridge and Mary Milton does not appear in the Bradninch Parish Register, although there are some references to the Milton family there, as well as in the Bishop's Transcripts of the Bradninch Parish Register, the registers for nearby Stoke Canon and Clayhanger parishes and in Phillimore's Marriage Index for Taunton.
- There are records of a Richard Melton being born in Oxfordshire around 1595 and having a wife named Margaret Melton, both of whom died in Charles City VA. These are the names of the parents listed on the christening record for Mary Milton. None of the other RIchard Meltons (or similar) born in the UK around that time had a wife named Margaret. These are almost certainly the parents of Mary Milton, mother of Mary Militon (formerly Maugridge).
