Notes

........Mary's property holdings were:

...........527 acres from her first husband Thomas Keene

...........240 acres from her second husband Henry Raynor

...........300 acres from her third husband Thomas Broughton

...........____

.........1,067 ACRES TOTAL

........Mary Margie Thorley Keene Raynor Broughton's will was recorded February 10, 1662 It was written January 2, 1662. Her will was mutilated, and there are some missing words. Her exact date of death is not known. We don't know if the "recorded" date here is the "probate date ". (The probate date is after the death, when the will is probated or presented to the court).

Mary's transcribed will is signed Mary M Broughton, with the middle initial M underlined indicating that Mary was illiterate , and that she did not sign her own will. Her first husband Thomas Keene was also illiterate and his will and other documents were signed with his mark only.

Comments

Born circa 1620 Stevensville, Queen Anne's County, MD, United States

Her birth on Kent Island is INCORRECT and/or in Maryland, as it was not settled until the 1630s, making Mary's birth there impossible. She may have been born in the VA colony (south), but might also have been born in England, no definitive records found for either.

Her maiden name is inferred from a will of Edward Thorley of Anne Arundel County, Maryland [Md . Cal. Wills, Vol. 1, p. 212], dated Dec 1678, probated 10 Feb 1678/9, believed to be her brother. In it, he bequests to his "Cousin Thomas Keene". At that time, the use of Cousin would refer most likely to a nephew. This conclusion is not rock solid, since it is possible that the relationship was indeed not that of nephew, or it is possible that the Thomas Keene named referred to another by the same name. Indeed, ["Keene Family Genealogy" owned by Harvey Warley Stedman, 1958, p.11] lists "Thomas Keene, living 1679, cousin of Edward Thorley" as a son of Henry Keene of Wadsworth, Surrey. However, the inference there was made purely as a result of the existance of the Ed. Thorley will and the presence of other sons of Henry Keene in Maryland. It thus appears that the Thorley theory is reasonably strong. The mention of first cousin Garner in later will of first cousin on the Keene side makes it a fact.

!Marriage(2): Deed dated 22 Mar 1658 [North. R.B. 15, p. 19; Ritchie & Wood p. 191] shows her to have married Henry Raynor.

!Marriage(3): Northumberland B. 15, pp. 19-20, records the marriage agreement, on 22 Mar 1658, of Mary Raynor, widow of Henry, and Thomas Broughton [Ritchie & Wood p. 191-2]

!Will: "Of Mary Broughton Widow relict of Thomas Broughton decd.", [Northumberland Co. R. B. 15, p. 92; Ritchie & Wood p. 192-3]. Dated 2 Jan 1662, recorded Feb 10, 1662. Mary Thorley is probable sister to Jane Basha-Perry d 1651 (wife to Giles Basha and Edmund Perry), and Bridget (Thorsby) Nevill d around 1645 (wife of John Nevill). Both these family groups are mentioned in early MA archives, alongside Keene, and Richard Garnett/Garrett who was a Basha in-law.
These groupings have some family connections into 1700's Stafford, VA.
