GEDCOM Note

Mary Ann married John Knight in Kent and in 1841 came to Australia with him and their nine month old daughter, as assisted immigrants aboard the "Fairlie". They departed in July 1841 and arrived in Sydney 5th November 1841. During the trip their daughter Mary Ann may have died as the shipping indents have recorded this death, however it appears to be crossed out. A descendant of Mary Ann Hampton/Knight's uncle tells that Mary Ann had to stay on board for some time due to fever, but has given no proof of this. This could have been when the baby died.(ADD IT: Their daughter Mary Anne was in the sick bay with inflammation on the 27th October 1841 and they stayed on board for 11 days after arriving.

There may have been a daughter born to the couple as certificates seem to indicate a daughter Mary Ann was born at Williams River about 1843. This daughter married John V Newman on 6th March 1865 aged 22 and Died aged 66 in 1909 at Scone. Her marriage certificate states she was born at Williams River and that her fan Knight was deceased and her mother was Mary Ann Hampton.

Mary reads and William a farm laborer reads and writes and both were in good health.

Mary Ann Hampton/Knight married john Royle/Riley probably in 1845 at Raymond Terrace. She had sixteen children altogether and died at scone on 13th April 1898 and was buried in Gundy.

Mary Ann was 21 years of age according to the shipping records which would indicate she was born 1820. As there is some confusion about the first few children of William Hampton regarding names and dates for this account of her life she has been list as being born 1819.
