• John2 Whipple (John1, MatthewA) baptized 25 December 1625 in Bocking, Essex County, England; died 10 August 1683 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. He married (1) Martha Reyner about 1653 at Ipswich. She died 24 February 1679 in Ipswich (2) Mrs. Elizabeth (Cogswell) Paine 28 June 1680 at Ipswich. John emigrated to Massachusetts Bay colony in 1638 with his parents when he was almost 13 years old. He was an entrepreneur and started a number of business in Ipswich. He was an officer in King Philip's War, served as selectman, Essex county treasurer, and Ipswich's representative to the general court for four years between 1674-1683. He left an estate of £3,000. John and Elizabeth had no children.

• 1739, Jan. 28th. Matthew Whipple, of the Hamlet, d. in his eightieth year. He m. Martha, daughter of John, and granddaughter of General Dennison. She d. Sept. 12th, 1728, in her sixtieth year. Mr. Whipple left children, Matthew, John, William, who was of Kittery in 1730, where his son William was born, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Brigadier-General at the capture of Burgoyne; — Joseph, settled in the ministry at Hampton Falls, and Martha Hartshorne. He had a malt-house and oat-mill, in which he carried on much business. To his mulatto servant he gave

• "John Whipple, senior [Matthew] of the Hamlet, died Nov. 22, 1695. He was son of Matthew, [and was] baptized in Essex, England, Sept. 6, 1632. he was Lieutenant of a troop, held town offices, was Deputy to the General Court in 1674, 1679, 1682, 1683. He married a daughter (Mary) of Humphrey Reyner of Rowley. She survived him. He left children, John, Matthew, Joseph, Cyprian, Mary, Anna, Sarah, Elizabeth and Hannah. • "Matthew Whipple, [John, Matthew] of the Hamlet, died January 28, 1739, in his eightieth year, He married Martha, daughter of john, and grand daughter of General Denison. [Major General Daniel Denison of Ipswich, born in England in 1612, who died Sept. 20, 1682, in Ipswich, was for eleven years Major General of the colony, and very prominent in colonial affairs.—See Denison Memorial, Ipswich, Mass., 1882] She died Sept 12, 1728, in her sixtieth year. Mr. Whipple left children, Matthew, John, William, who was of Kittery in 1730, where his son William was born, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Brigadier General at the capture of Burgoyne;—Joseph, settled in the ministry at Hampton Falls, and Martha Hartshorne. The children of John and Martha [Symonds] Denison were

5  ii MARTHA4 DENISON, b. 1 March 1667/68, [26]   married three times. [27]  She married first, THOMAS WIGGINof Exeter, New Hampshire, b. at Hampton, 5: 1 mo.: 1660/61, son of Andrew and Hannah [Anne Bradstreet] Wiggin, [28]  and they had one child

• i.   HANNAH WIGGIN, b. ca. 1690.  Her marriage to Jonathan Cogswell was recorded at Ipswich , Oct. 23, 1717.[30]

Martha married second, in 1693,[31] JONATHAN THING, mentioned in the probate record above, who died 31 October, 1694, at age 40:[32] 

 They had one son:

• ii.  DANIEL THING, May 12, 1694.[33]  Guardianship was granted to Matthew Whipple, 23 October 1700.[34]  When he married ELIZABETH CLARK of Newbury,[35]   3 March  1717/18 , he was called “Daniell Thing of Exeter.”[36]  At Exeter, he and his wife had five children. [37] 

Returning to Ipswich, Martha married her third husband, MATTHEW WHIPPLE, 11 June 1697.[38]  He was the son of son of Capt. John and Martha [Reynor] Whipple.  The probate documents of Jonathan Thing also allude to Martha’s marriage to Matthew Whipple.  Martha then had three (or four) children with Matthew:  all but one are found in the Ipswich Vital Records:[39] 

•    iii.  JOSEPH WHIPPLE, b. 31 July 1701;  
•   iv.  MARTHA WHIPPLE, b. 07 January 1703/04 and d. in three weeks time;   
•    v.  MARTHA WHIPPLE again, for whom no birth record has been found;[40]  m. Ebenezer Hartshorn.      
•    vi.  NATHANIEL WHIPPLE, b. 2 September 1711.   

 Martha [Denison] [Wiggin] [Thing] Whipple d. 12 September 1728 at Ipswich,[41] and the entry leaves no doubt about her identity: “Whipple, Martha, w. Maj. Matthew, Esq., and d. John Dennison, only s. Maj. Daniel, Sept. 12, 1728, in her 60th y.”

Biography

Martha Denison, born 2 Mar 1669 at Ipswich, Massachusetts, was the second child of Martha Symonds & John Denison.

After the death of Martha's father, John Denison, in 1671, her mother married Richard Martyn of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to where they removed.

Per the only reference available to date, this Martha Denison married three times in the following order:

1) Thomas Wiggin, a grandson of Gov. Thomas Wiggin, also of Gov. Simon Bradstreet. [Note: On the basis of this entry, his probable parents are profiled as Andrew Wiggin and Hannah Bradstreet, however there are insufficient data at this time to conclude the relationship. If/when such data may become available in the future, this profile should be appropriately attached, then this statement should be deleted.]

2) July, 1693, Capt. Jonathan Thing, of Exeter, N. H., who died Oct. 30, 1694. They had one son, Daniel, born May 12, 1694. [Capt. Jonathan Thing's first wife was Mary Oilman. They had two sons, Edward and Moses Thing.]

3) Major Matthew Whipple, who is herewith described:

Matthew Whipple, of "Ipswich, in the County of Essex, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, yeoman," bought of Edward Cogswell, Oct 24, 1747, " one half of the Iron Works in New Milford, North Purchase, standing on a stream called Aspetuck . . . with all the appurtenances, privileges, and accommodations belonging thereunto, with the privilege of the iron ore, as I, said Edward Cogswell, have of Eisha Williams and Martin Kellogg." From which it appears that Edward Cogswell and his brother-in-law, Matthew Whipple, carried on the first manufacturing interest in that part of New Milford. The "wife of Maj. Matthew Whipple, Esq., died Sept. 12, 1728, in ye 60th year of her age."
