Gilbert de Venables was noted in the records in 1086 and 1098. It is not clear what coat of arms Gilbert carried, however his seal was a falcon sinister regardant (falcon with his head looking backward, to the left of the shield bearer). He gave the advowson of the Church of Astbury to the Abbey of St. Werburge at Chester in 1098. His son is unknown, but in 1102 at Shrewsbury is Ulger Grosvenor, alias Ulger de Venables, with Roger de Nevil, and others. (The History and Antiquities of Shrewsbury: Vol. 1; Phillips) Gilbert de Venables’ grandson was Gilbert de Venables, Baron of Kinderton in the reign of Henry II.
This grandson, Gilbert, married Margery the daughter of Walthew, son of Wolfric, Lord of Hatton by whom he had halfe of Moxton near Gawesworth in ffrank-marriage.
According to Ormerod, Gilbert Venables … was the progenitor of numerous lines of the Venables family, of the Leghs of Booth, with their collateral branches, and the Meres of Mere; to which must be added with probability only not amounting to positive proof, the Leghs of West Hall, and with weaker, but still very strong probability, the Dones (Donnes), Leghs of East Hall, and Breretons. Also of this line were the Grosvenors, from gros venor (large hunter), and it would appear the Butlers of Chester, Barons of Warrington, who bore, or, a bend azure, differenced by the wheat sheaves of Chester.
Gilbert was the father of: William de Venables, Hamon de Legh, Gilbert de Lymme, Michael de Merston, Richard de Neubold, Hugh de Venables, Maud and Amabile. The third baron, died in 1188.

- Amabile Venables married Richard de Davenport, lord of Davenport. Richard was appointed supreme forester of the earl’s forests of Leek and Macclesfield, Cheshire between 1153 and 1181, by Hugh, Earl of Chester. The vill of Davenport was originally part of the holdings of Gislebertus de Venator. He gave the vill of Daneport (Davenport) to Orme, a villain of the manor of Eccleston, raising him to the rank of a free tenant of the barony of Kinderton. Orme became Orme de Davenport. He and Ralph de Bereton witnessed a deed made by the first baron, Gilbert de Venables. Clearly, Orme must have done something remarkable for this to have occurred. Even more exciting is that Orme’s descendent, Richard, married the granddaughter of the first Gilbert de Venables. Richard de Davenport received a grant of Marton in frank marriage to Amabilia. This was witnessed by Ralph de Brereton, descendent of the first Ralph, who had received Brereton from the first baron, Gislebertus de Venables. Richard de Davenport and Amabilia de Venables were the parents of Thomas de Davenport. He was the father of Richard. Richard was the father of: Amicia wife of Randle de Chedleton; Vivian de Davenport who married Beatris de Hulme; Walter Davenport of Somerford Boothes; and Peter de Davenport.
- Maude Venables married first Radulfus Baron of Chester, son of Roger, and then she married Hugh de Bixis. Her brother William gave her Winsham (Wimingham, Wincham) and half of Pickmere upon her marriage. She conveyed the manor of Winsham to Nicholas de Elets for half a knight’s fee. Nicholas had married Maude’s eldest daughter. Henry, the son of Nicholas, conveyed the manor of Winsham with its appurtenances to William Venables the younger in 1233. William Venables the younger also bought additional land from Guy of Winsham. William was the father of two daughters who were his heirs. Lettice, the eldest, married Sir Richard de Wilburgham, Lord of Wymincham and Radnor, and then she married Philip de Baumvile. Lettice held Radnour, Hulme, the castle of Northwich, Hulcroft, two ox-gangs of land in Congleton and two wich-houses in Middle-wich. The youngest daughter was Beatrix. She married Raufe de Wasteneys and held the manor of Winsham except Twambrooks and the mill of Windham. Eventually these lands were bought by Sir Richard Egerton of Ridley. A deed in 1606 notes that the lands were sold to Richard Harecourt, gentleman, except for enclosures taken out of the commons of Winsham by Sir Thomas Venables of Kinderton (died 1606). Also holding 2 messuages in Winsham in 1606 was Robert Venables of Antrobus in Over-Whitley.
- Gilbert de Lymme died in 1208 and was the father of Hugh de Limme and Thomas. Hugh married Emma and they were the parents of Thomas Legh, Alan de Lymme, Simon, Beatrix, and Richard de Lymme. Thomas Legh was the father of Gilbert and Robert Legh of Brome Lymme. Alan de Lymme married Margeria and they were the parents of Gilbert de Lymme who died in 1342. Simon was the father of Robert. Richard de Limme married Agnes daughter of Richard de Legh. Agnes married, as her second husband, William de Hawardyn, and her third husband was William Venables of Bradwall. Agnes Legh and Richard de Limme were the parents of Thomas de Legh who bore the Limme arms, Gules a pale fussily argent. Later this family would change their arms to Or a Lion rampant Gules.
- Hugh de Venables was rector of Eccleston, Rosthorne, and Astbury by the grant of his brother Sir William. The church of Astbury was given by Gilbert Venables to the abbey of St. Werburgh at Chester in 1093. Hugh Venables was the rector in 1188.
- Michael de Venables of Merston was a witness to grants from Sir William Venables and to his niece, Amabilia in 1156 and to his brother Hugh in 1188.
- Richard de Venables by deed in the time of King John (1199 – 1216) or Henry III (1216-1272) quitclaimed to his brother Hamon all the lands of his brother Hugh Venables of Mersten …totum jus et totum clameum meum de pueris Hugonis de Merston. His seal was a warrior holding a sword in his right hand and in his left a shield emblazoned with an escarboucle (similar to an astric). In 1253 Dom. Richard de Venables witnessed a quitclaim deed for part of the annual rent of a saltmill at Stretton from Dom. Laurence, Abbot and of the Convent, from William de Stafford with the assent of Ermetruda, his wife to the church and monks of Burton. Also witnessing the deed were: Dom. Robert de Stafford his brother; Dom. John de Chandoys William de Alstnaeston; and Dom. Herebert rector of Eggynton.
- Sir William de Venables was Baron of Kinderton from 1188 to 1228. In the Visitation of 1580 is the decent from Gilbert Venables to Sir William Venables who called Gilbert Venables proavus suus. (great grandfather)
