HUGH ROSS and MARGARET CHEELEY lived in Colonial days in Elizabeth City, Virginia, now Hampton, near the coast, and over river from North Carolina. This was a good family in a promising new land. Hugh lived around 1671-1701, and Margaret from 1671-1719. Hugh Ross was from Scotland, but Margaret was of English ancestry.

After the passing of husband Hugh Ross, Margaret remarried to James Priest and had four more children. Later son William Ross, and several of the children of his brothers Francis and Hugh Ross migrated to various counties of North-East, North Carolina.

Both Hugh and Margaret passed away in Virginia; and Margaret's will was in Elizabeth City in 1719, mentioning three sons, FRANCIS ROSS, HUGH ROSS and WILLIAM ROSS.

notes

Newly found old books online identify Hugh Ross and Margaret of Elizabeth City, Virginia as parents of William Ross of Martin County. And the source attached from research by the Virginia Historical Society talks about Hugh Ross and the Mallories as probably related and as partners of some sort. Hugh Ross, son Hugh Ross, and Francis Ross are mentioned in this reference. Hugh was dcd about 1701 and his widow Mary was remarried in 1702 as shown by a marriage bond in Elizabeth City (now Hampton). She remarried James Priest with several Priest Children, and the will mentions Francis, Hugh and William Ross. Francis and Hugh stayed in Virginia while William Ross went to Martin County. As the events in Elizabeth City do not mention William Ross outside the will, William could have moved. History of Martin County, NC says William Ross came from Roanoke, Virginia. That is roughly near Hampton, Elizabeth City, Virginia.
