MARGARET KINCAID

Her Last Will and Testament

Margaret Kincaid, here treated, the wife of Gilbert Woddrope, maltman burgess of Glasgow, made her last will and testament at Glasgow on 26 June 1622. She nominated and constituted her husband Gilbert to be her only executor, with power to him to intromitt with the goods and gear and give up the inventory. Among the debts owed by Margaret and her husband was two hundred and ten pounds, thirteen shillings and four pence to: "Waltir Woddrope his sone of portione naturall befalling to him be deceis of umqlle Jeane Broune his mother procreat betwixt hir & the said Gilbert". With the exception of the legacy she left to her son William Hunter, she left her part of the free gear to her husband Gilbert Woddrope and their son James Woddrope. The legacy left to William Hunter included: "ane feddir bed, ane covering, ane pair of sheetts, ane bollster wt ane pair of blankatts". Because she could not write Margaret Kincaid subscribed her last will and testament with her hand touching the pen of the notary public, William Gray. The witnesses present and subscribing were Robert Hunter and Gilbert Hunter, both identified as merchants and burgesses of Glasgow, and William Gray, the foresaid notary public.
