Major John Lewis, baptized 15 December 1633 at St. Teilo's, died c 1681. Heir to Port Holy from kinsman William Lewis. Vestryman St. Peter's Parish, New Kent. No tombstone. Married Isabella, daughter of James Miller (settled York Co. by 1648), born 24 August 1640, died 9 February 1703, buried Poropotanke Creek.

She married 2nd Robert Yard, later of Petworth Parish in Gloucester Co., at St. Mary's Church, Newington, Surrey, England on 16 October 1682.

Their children were

There are few records for some of the people we are researching. And, it is natural that we would attempt to connect the disparate Lewis families. Previously, many Lewis records have been attached to the predominant Lewis Family of Warner Hall. Of note, the only proven children of Maj. John Lewis of Chemokins are Edward and Councilor John Lewis of Warner Hall. This is an attempt to document some of these records which should be disconnected:

Ancestry

Tradition long had it that the Lewises of Warner Hall descended from a Robert who had a grant from the crown for 33,3331/3 acres, and that Robert's lineage was ancient and Welsh. Tradition, however, was largely undone in 1948 on the discovery of several tombstones on Poropotancke Creek in King and Queen County: "Here lieth interred the body of John Lewis (born in Munmouth shire) died the 21st of August 1657 aged 63 years." Robert was wrong, Wales was right. The line reaches back to Rhys Goch ap Maenyrch, born c 1070, lord of Ystrad Yw. Firm documentation starts with Richard, grandfather of John. Subsequent research into church, land, and emigration records bears all this out convincingly.

Maj. John "of Chemokins" (1John) Lewis (Conjecture)

Maj. John Lewis was born c. 1634 in Monmouthshire, Wales. John is most noted for being the father of Councilor John Lewis. John is first cited as headright for his father's 1653 land patent in then York Co VA. Much confusion results from an additional record which shows a John Lewis as headright for Col. George Reade, the forefather of George Washington, in 3/1658. Perhaps, this was another John Lewis?

John Lewis was in America in 1658 can be shown by the York County records of October 8, 1658 and that he was headright of Col. George Reade on March 1658.

In about 1660, John inherited Chemokins after the death of his brother, William. [SIC] And by 1666 in New Kent Co VA, John married Isabella Miller b. 8/24/1640 New Kent Co VA. John and Isabella lived the remainder of their lives, probably on the original homestead. John is said to have managed Chemokins through a series of overseers which included some of his sons.

John died 12/2/1689 in New Kent Co VA. Isabella would later marry Robert Yard of England. But after her death, Isabella was returned to the Lewis Plantation and is buried in the Old Lewis Cemetery in what is now King and Queen Co VA.

1676 Bacon's Rebellion

General Court Records:

John Lewis' residence in 1676 being near Major Thomas Pate's, where Bacon encamped, he suffered severely from the depredations of his troops.

"Persons who Suffered by Bacon's Rebellion": 15 Oct. 1677 Col. John West, a person greatly impaired in his stock and goods by the Rebells, and a most constant Loyall Gentleman during the late Rebellion, and was for some time after Bacon's death Inprisoned by the Rebell Partie."

Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 5, p. 67: At Middlesex Court in Feb 1677 one Matyhew Bentley was summoned to answer the charge that during the late rebellion, when in command of forty or fifty men-in-arms at Major Lewis' plantation in New Kent county, he killed three hogs and four sheep, used a great deal of corn, and took meal for the whole rebel army at Major Pate's The Pate residence was just south of Chemokins.

He adds: "John married Isabella Miller in about 1664 in England. She was the daughter of James Miller. John, his wife, and their sons, John and Zachary, emigrated to Virginia in about 1692. Source: The Family Chronicle and Kinship Book by Octavia Zollicoffer Bond, 1928, p. 611."

And, from the Shackelford Clan Magazine, Genealogy of Shackelfords and Shacklefords, edited by T. K. Jones, Lubbock, Texas January 1956 Vol. 11 No. 9, and posted on the Web, we have:

In and among records sent to us in November 1941, by Mrs. Jennie T. Grayson, of Charlottesville, Va., we find her making the following statement: Quote-

"Zachary Lewis, of Brecon or Brecknock, in Brecknockshire, Wales, was the first of his line known to have come to Virginia. His wife's name unknown. Among the many grants of land to the name of Lewis recorded in the Land Books of Virginia, in the Land Office at Richmond, Va., there are only two to Zachary Lewis. One for 500 acres in King and Queen Co., Virginia, April 20, 1694, and one for 450 acres in King William County, Va., October 23, 1703. See Books 8, page 318, and book 9, page 556.

"This coroborates the statement of Rev. Iverson Lewis, that he was the son of John Lewis, whose father Zachary Lewis came from Breaknock, Wales, to Virginia 1692, at which time he settled in the County of King and Queen. And beyond this nothing is known of this Zachary except that he was a member of the Church of England and had two sons--John and Zachary, Jr."

(editor: I have seen this son John as married to Elizabeth Warner. I am told that is a different John of no known kin to these Lewises... this needs work, but meantime I will carry it as so...)

Some Lewises of Virginia relate the following story, supplying a French heritage, not Welsh! Iverson Lewis Brooks relates this in 1858: (copy from Thomas Bledsoe, , January, 2004)

" Vicinity of Hamburg S.C. February 5th 1858 From Rev Iverson Lewis Brooks Mr Lewis

"My dear Sir Yours directed through Col Harris was mislaid by him & detained several months and through misdirection did not reach me till the season of the year when I am usually in attendance upon a series of meetings continuing through the summer & Fall. It is thus I have been too long waiting an opportunity to acknowledge your favor & to draw off some document which will be interesting to you provided you have not communicated with John Lewis of Frankfort Kentucky & obtained them from him. I proceed to give you an extract from his letter in which were enclosed copies of the family register of his grand Father his Father & himself. The letter In addition to enclosed document will give you some information in regard to our remote ancestors which may interest you. Before the revocation of the Edict of Nantes a young protestant French Lawyer of some wealth & reputation foreseeing the coming storm of papal persecution secretly conveyed to England & Ireland most of his property converted into money & then fled to England. He purchased land in Wales near Llangollen & Brecknock ; & also in Ireland His name was Jean Louis which after being anglicized became John Lewis the father of 3 sons. One of them for some time after he was grown remained with his father in Wales & subsequently emigrated to Virginia & settled finally on or near the Dragon Swamp in Gloucester or Middlesex County. He was your mediate ancestor and mine & of all the Welsh Lewises of Virginia. His given name I do not know perhaps you can inform me ; But most of his descendants have for their given names Howel, Iveson, Warner & Zachary....."

He emigrated to the American colonies approximately 1655, a few years

after his father had done so. According to family legend he resided

in Wales with the Mostyn family of Denbighshire for a time before

emigrating. That John Lewis was in America in 1658 can be shown by

the York County records of October 8, 1658 and that he was head right

of Col. George Reade on March 1657/58. He would have been 18 years

old at the time and seemingly attached himself to the adventures of

his uncle, Major William Lewis, since they seem to have followed the

same paths and been closely related. Major William Lewis, it is

reported, never married and at his death (which exact date cannot be

determined), Major John Lewis was the beneficiary of his estate.

Chemokins plantation would thus be in his possession, although there

is nothing to suggest that he resided there as a permanent resident.

There seems no doubt that he maintained it on an absentee-landlord

basis, operating the plantation by means of overseers and managers and

a gang of slave labor. Several of his sons, when they reached an age

where they could act as overseers, resided there. Major John Lewis

made his principal residence on the property north of Poropotanke

Creek that he would have inherited from his father, Col. John Lewis,

and probably resided there also in a separate dwelling during his

father's later years. This would have been in New Kent County until

1692 and then in King and Queen County. He apparently received his

rank of Major for his service in the New Kent County Militia and

possibly at the Indian raid against the Indian town of Chymocans in

1644.

On Feb 25, 1673-4, Lt. Col. John Smith, Mr. John Buckner, Mr., Philip Lig htfoot, Mr. Thomas Royston, and Mr. John Lewis received a patent for 10,0 50 acres on north side Mattapony River in New Kent Co.(later K&Q).

In 1676 John Lewis lived not far from the home of Maj. Thomas Pate, whic h was in Gloucester Co., where Nathaniel Bacon and his followers were enc amped. Lewis suffered great losses in stock and goods at the hands of Bac on's troops. Thomas Pate's home was about 2 miles away across Poropotan k Creek.

In 1677 a Major Lewis was credited with paying the parish of Petsworth i n Gloucester County 500 lbs. tobacco 8 br. 4th. 1677.

In November 1678 Coll Lewis was paid for a lock to the church door.

A patent to Maj. William Lewis was in hands of Maj. John

Lewis of Warner Hall in 1717; he deeded it to his son Charles

found in Hening's Statutes, vol II, page 377. This Maj. Lewis

held the title as early as 1653.

The author re-states Robert Lewis of York had only two daus, BUT he

was "doubtless a kinsman of the LEWISes of Warner Hall." Maj.

William Lewis's connection to Col. John Lewis apparently hinges

on ownership of plantation "Chemokins" or "Chemohocans."

The author then says the most likely parents of Col. John

Lewis of Warner Hall is John Lewis and Lydia of Gloucester who

settled on Lewis' Creek, formerly Totopotomoy Creek. His prob

able sons when he emigrated were: William, Edward and John Jr.

William MIGHT BE the above William; Edward settled in Rappahan

nock and King & Queen Cos; John Jr. granted lands in 1655 at main

swamp of Poropotank Creek. As Mr. John Lewis he patented land in

New Kent and Goucester, both sides above creek. In 1676 his

residence was near Maj. Thomas PATE's where Bacon encamped and

died.

(page 372) "According to the tombstone of his son Col. John

Lewis, he married Isabella _____, and had issue..." The footnote

says "It is not know (sic) how many sons John Lewis and Isabella

his wife had."

page 373: "John Lewis of Warner Hall, son of Maj. John

Lewis and Isabella, his wife, who was probably son of John Lewis

and Lydia who first settled on Poropotank Creek in 1653 was born

30 NOV 1669 and d. 14 NOV 1725. He married Elizabeth Warner

(1672-1719-20), dau Col. Augustine Warner and Mildred Read ...

They had 14 children but only 8 names are preserved.

John Jr. is the John of most patents -- including one adj.

George AUSTIN's line and Poropotank Swamp. He dropped the 'Jr"

in patents after 1657; he lived in New Kent Co., near Maj. Thomas

Pate, about two miles across the Poropotank Creek. His burial

spot is not found, but a tombstone for Mrs. Isabella Yard (1640

1703/4) is certainly his wife who married secondly Robert Yard.

The tombstone for Capt. Edward Lewis (1667-1713) was found

at foot of Mrs. Isabella Yard's grave -- he is identified as son

of John and Isabella.

Maj. John "of Chemokins" (1John) Lewis (Conjecture)

Maj. John Lewis was born c. 1634 in Monmouthshire, Wales. John is most noted for being the father of Councilor John Lewis. John is first cited as headright for his father's 1653 land patent in then York Co VA. Much confusion results from an additional record which shows a John Lewis as headright for Col. George Reade, the forefather of George Washington, in 3/1658. Perhaps, this was another John Lewis?

John Lewis was in America in 1658 can be shown by the York County records of October 8, 1658 and that he was headright of Col. George Reade on March 1658.

In about 1660, John inherited Chemokins after the death of his brother, William. And by 1666 in New Kent Co VA, John married Isabella Miller b. 8/24/1640 New Kent Co VA. John and Isabella lived the remainder of their lives, probably on the original homestead. John is said to have managed Chemokins through a series of overseers which included some of his sons.

John died 12/2/1689 in New Kent Co VA. Isabella would later marry Robert Yard of England. But after her death, Isabella was returned to the Lewis Plantation and is buried in the Old Lewis Cemetery in what is now King and Queen Co VA.

John Lewis' residence in 1676 being near Major Thomas Pate's, where Bacon encamped, he suffered severely from the depredations of his troops.

15 Oct. 1677 Col. John West, a person greatly impaired in his stock and goods by the Rebells, and a most constant Loyall Gentleman during the late Rebellion, and was for some time after Bacon's death Inprisoned by the Rebell Partie."

Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 5, p. 67:

At Middlesex Court in Feb 1677 one Matyhew Bentley was summoned to answer the charge that during the late rebellion, when in command of forty or fifty men-in-arms at Major Lewis' plantation in New Kent county, he killed three hogs and four sheep, used a great deal of corn, and took meal for the whole rebel army at Major Pate's The Pate residence was just south of Chemokins.

John Lewis was the immigrant. He and his wife, probably Elizabeth MNU, arrived Virginia by 1673. It is believed they came from Wales. He is found on the 1679 Tythables for Turkey Creek, Henrico County, Va. with 3 tythables. His will was filed in Henrico County in 1689. His wife had already remarried at the time of probate. No further trace of his wife is found after the settlement of his estate.

NOTE: I think it is possible she was a second wife, based on the fact William was made admin. of his father's estate and guardian for his sister, Sarah.

The Lewis line starts with John Lewis and his wife, possibly Elizabeth. An old family history says they were from Wales. They were in Henrico County by 1640. John Lewis and John Rogers received 400 Acres of land in Henrico in 1673. John also appears on the 1679 Tythables for Henrico County living on Turkey Island. John Lewis was dead before 1689. On Dec 2 of that year the estate of John Lewis was divided between his widow, now Mrs. Samuel Trottman, his son and executor. William Lewis and daughter Sarah. William was also made guardian of his sister, Sarah. William married Elizabeth Woodson and Sarah Lewis married Elizabeth's brother, Robert Woodson, JR.

William Lewis died between Dec. 24, 1706 and May of 1707. He made an oral will on Dec. 24th. In it he names his wife, Elizabeth and his sons, John (eldest), William and Joseph. It was witnessed by George Payne (husband of Mary Woodson, a sister of Elizabeth Woodson Lewis) and Elizabeth Johnson. The will was recorded May 1, 1707 and Elizabeth was made administrator. That same day Robert Woodson, Sr. recorded a gift of 450 acres of land to be divided between his "loving grandsons, William and Joseph Lewis."

Joseph Lewis married Elizabeth (possibly Pleasants) by 1730. By 1731 Joseph was buying land in Goochland County, Va. Children for Joseph and Elizabeth include John, William, Joseph, Jr., Elizabeth (Robards), Ann (Mosby), Mary (Cocke), and Sarah(Redford).

Joseph Lewis, Jr. married # Sarah Williamson and #2 Anne Porter Sampson. His sister, Elizabeth Lewis Robards moved her family to Mercer County, KY following the death of her husband. Her brother, Joseph, followed with his family in 1790. Members of the Mosby family also moved to Mercer County.

Jean Louis was born in France circa 1635, where his ancestors had lived for several generations, originally coming from Wales.
In 1687, after France revoked the Edict of Nantes and thereby prohibited Protestantism, Jean Louis and his wife and three sons fled to Wales where he bought a tract of land, settled, and presumably lived for the remainder of his life. Jean Louis immediately re-anglicized his name to John Lewis. He was a gallant soldier for the British Army as evidenced by his participation in nineteen pitched battles and twenty-three sieges. He was finally appointed Commander-in-Chief and Colonel of the First Foot Guard.

John Lewis's (Jean Louis's) first son, William Lewis, Sr., was born in France around 1660 and returned to Wales in 1687, where he married Mary McClelland (of Scotland) in 1688 and settled in Northern Ireland. They had three sons, William Lewis, Jr., John Lewis, and Andrew Lewis, all who moved their families to the New World in the 1700s, settling in North Carolina and Virginia. William Lewis, Sr. established a new law practice in Northern Ireland, where he lived out the remainder of his life, dying in 1720.

John Lewis's (Jean Louis's) second son, John, settled in London and set up his own law practice after escaping from France. He eventually moved to Virginia and settled along the Rappahanock River. Among his descendents are Fielding Lewis, Howell Lewis, and Robert Lewis, the secretary to and nephew of George Washington. There is no further information in this site on this John Lewis nor his descendents.

John Lewis's (Jean Louis's) third son, Thomas, settled in Wales after escaping from France. He later emigrated to Virginia and settled on Dragon Swamp in Middlesex County. He was probably the Thomas Lewis who surveyed the Fairfax line for Lord Fairfax in 1746. And, he was the progenitor of the Ivison, Zachary, and John Lewis lineage. There is no further information in this site on this Thomas Lewis nor his descendents.

There is substantial evidence that Jean Louis (John Lewis) was directly related to the Lewises of Harpton Court in Radnorshire County, Wales. This family resided in Radnorshire County for as long as any record of that county has existed. Its lineage is traceable for many generations before the custom of using surnames prevailed in Wales. Thomas Lewis was the Sheriff of Radnorshire in 1522. Thomas Lewis of the House of Brunswick was in Parliament for the borough of Radnorshire for fifty years, about 1720 to 1770. Sir Thomas Franklin Lewis was representative of the County of Radnorshire, vice-president of the Board of Trade, and Treasurer of the Navy.

The greatest amount of the above information comes from the book, "William Lewis, Jr. and His Descendents of Black River North Carolina," written by Mr. Claude S. Lewis of Sampson County, NC and published by its author in 1982.
