About Lucy Witherspoon
Not the same as Louise Welch who died unmarried
There is no primary documentation for identifying Luyse (Louise) Knox with Lucy Knox Witherspoon. It is a widespread assumption of long standing, but has no visible means of support.
Ancestral claim
“Some indicate that Witherspoon's genealogy is difficult to follow, but with today’s computerized genealogical tools, such as Ancestry.com, it is a little easier to find the connection between Knox and Witherspoon. The key is in the book entitled "The Genealogy of the Witherspoon Family With some account of other families with which it is connected," first written 1840. It was later “compiled” by Joseph G. Wardlaw (Yorkville, SC: The Enquirers Office, 1910). On page 4 it is clear that Lucy (or Luyse, for she was born in France during her father's exile there) Welch, the only daughter of John Welch and Elizabeth Knox, married a Rev. Mr. Wotherspoon, or Witherspoon, a parish minister in Scotland and they had sons, David, Gavin and James. David married and had a son John who was the head of a large family that immigrated early to the colony of South Carolina, while James and his wife Helen had a son, who became the Rev. James Alexander Witherspoon III who was the father of the celebrated Dr. John Knox Witherspoon of Princeton. So this relativity clear family tree can be seen here: .... (dead link)
