About Katherine ‘Alias Sarah Grymes’ Jones

Born Sarah Katherine Deadman,, daughter of Henry Dedman and Katherine. After Henry passed Katherine married Rev. Charles Grymes and he adopted Sarah Katherine. In some geneologies she is known as Sarah Grymes, Katherine Dedman, Katherine Deadman, Catherine Debnam, Catherine Grymes and Sarah Dedman. Sarah's mother was also named Katherine.

Descendant Henry G. Taliaferro has made a convincing case that by 6 January 1672/3, Katherine (Debnam) Taliaferro had married as her (2) husband, Colonel Cadwallader Jones, c.1652-post 1699, son of Richard Jones and his wife Frances (Baldwin) Townsend.

John Frederick Dorman (author of VA Genealogist) had suggested the Mrs. Catherine Jones was Catherine Taliaferro, widow of Robert Taliaferro of "Taliaferro's Mount," Rappahannock River, VA. 9 documents recorded between 1673 and 1687 in Deed Books of old Rappahannock Co. related to Cad. Jones also involved Taliaferros. Between 1673-1687, Cadwallader Jones acted on behalf of Robert Taliaferro's minor children until they reached majority age (VA Custom/tradition) (based on VA Genealogist Article in Vol. 38, No. 3 by Henry G. Taliaferro, July, 1994 and other references as noted).

Katherine Debnam married Robert Taliaferro b: 11 SEP 1626 in London, England. Her father was either William Debham or Henry Debham. William Debham was born in 1600 and died in 1655. He was married to a Katherine and they had four children:

  • Mary Debham b: 1629 in Lancashire, England,
  • Katherine Debham
  • Ann Debham, and
  • William Debham. Henry Debham died between 5 Feb 1654/55 and 6 Jun 1655 in Gloucester County, Virginia. His wife was named Catherine, and the names of their children were the same as those of William and Katherine Debham. Therefore, William and Henry were probably the same person. In both cases, their daughter Katherine married twice, to Robert Taliaferro and Cadwallader Jones.

ALSO KNOWN AS SARAH GRYMES, KATHERINE DEADMAN.

GEDCOM Note

May be a dupe for Katherine Debman who first married Taliaferro and then married Cadwaller Jones. Her parents were listed as Henry william Debman and Katherine Frances Jennings, not Grymes, b one generation back from this Sarah Grymes. And birthdate is off too.

The Ancestry family trees with this info have only 1 source.

GEDCOM Note

Sarah Grymes father listed would be Charles Grymes married to Katherine Dedman. Neither has been proven to me so far.

GEDCOM Note

Potentially other spouses.
Either he was married twice or she thrice.
