In her will which was proven 4 October 1705, Eve (Smith) Williams of the parish of North Farnham, County of Richmond, Virginia, leaves her husband's, John William's, sea chest to their daughter, Katherine Williams, who was married to Abraham Goad. John Williams may not have been an ordinary sea man--as in his widow's will Eve leaves two thousand five hundred pounds of tobacco to their grandson Goad to purchase a servant (slave). Eve leaves two man servants (slaves) to her granddaughter, Hannah Goad, plus two pewter candlesticks and one of brass. Hannah also receives the new bed and furniture, the great table, a looking glass, two mares, and livestock. William, John and Hannah Goad also receive livestock. Eve apparently was fairly well to do.
William Cox was born in Virginia as were most of his Goad ancestors. Both his father, William Cox, and his mother, Mary Dillard, descend from Abraham Goad, born in Virginia in 1665 and died there in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia, in April 1734, and his wife, Katherine Williams, daughter of John Williams and his wife, Eve, maiden name unkown. Abraham and Katherine married in 1692. Eve died as Eve Smith as she married William Smith after the death of her husband John. Apparently Abraham and Katherine Goad's first three children were William born in August 1693, Hannah born in November 1695, and John born November 1700--although some Ancestry family trees have two older daughters who also were listed as younger that these three. Indications are the two girls listed twice in some trees were younger than William, Hannah, and John. Eve Smith had a will writen 24 April 1704--which was proven in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia on 4 October 1705. The will seems unusual for the time in some respects. Eve left her grandson, John Goad, three years old, 2500 pounds of tobacco to purchase a servant (slave). She left her granddaughter, Hannah Goad, age eight, her new bed and rest of the new furniture, the large table, pewter and brass candlesticks and other household goods. Her cattle and sheep were to be given half to Hannah and the other half to William Goad, age ten, and his brother John, age three. Eve left her daughter, Katherine Williams, who married Abraham Goad, the sea chest of her father, John Williams, which may be a clue to his occupation, and Eve's clothes. Her son-in-law, Abraham Goad, was named as Eve's executor. I noticed other wills where sons-in-law were named as executors in this family--even when the decedent had a living son or sons. In this case Katherine was Eve's only surviving child--her brother John had predeceased his mother. The inventory was done at the house of Abraham Goad in February 1706. Eve Smith's complete will is on Ancestry. William Cox decends from two children of Abraham Goad and his wife Katherine Williams. John, who was left 2500 pounds of tobacco to purchase a slave at age three, was the ancestor of William Cox's father, William. John's daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1726 in North Farnham Parish, married John Cock. Her sister, Johanna, born in 1723 in North Farnham Parish, married Valentine Sevier and became the mother of John Sevier, first Governor of Tennessee. William's ancestors, Elizabeth and John Cock, named a son Valentine. William Cox's mother, Mary Dillard, was the daughter of Ruth Goad and Thomas Dillard. Ruth's father was Abraham Goad, born in 1710, younger brother of John with the 2500 pounds of tobacco and Hannah and William who also inherited from their grandmother, Eve Williams Smith in 1705. Eve's will seems most usual for the time and place.
