The descendants of John "the Immigrant" Lewis are the Warner Hall family of Lewises.

John Lewis was born 1594 in Monmouthshire, Wales. He grew up on one of this Lewis family's holdings in Monmouthshire, the easternmost county of Wales. He died 21 August 1657 on the family plantation and was buried at Old Lewis Cemetery, King and Queen Co VA. The cemetery is now located in New Kent Co VA and was found in 1948. Son of Lewis Prichard (Rycketts) and Catherine Morgan.

Married:

1. On 11/21/1630 in Monmouthshire, Wales to Lydia Lewis b. c. 1610 in Wales. John and family lived in Wales until about 1653 when they immigrated to York Co VA.

Notes

The first record of John is found in the 7/1/1653 York Co VA land patent where he received 250 acres as headright for transportation of five persons--himself, wife Lydia, William, Edward, and John, Jr.

John lived a good life and sired an enormously successful line which married into the most powerful families of Virginia--Washington, Marshall, Fielding, Meriwether, Daingerfield, Taliaferro. Descendants of John would sire presidents. But, perhaps, the most remarkable thing about John of Monmouthshire is his almost three-hundred-year anonymity. Most historians know of Councilor John Lewis, and some know of his father, Maj. John Lewis of Chemokins. But until the 1948 discovery of John "the Immigrant's" tombstone on the original family plantation, no one knew of this John Lewis.

!!!Notes from "The Welsh Lineage of John Lewis (1592-1657) show a baptism for a John Lewis, s on of the immigrant John, as being Dec. 15th, 1633. ???Could the immigrant John have had a s on, John, born in the 1616 time frame..who fathered another John by 1633?? He would be 17--wh ich is possible.

The Lewis Family of Ffrwdgrech, Lanfaes, Co. Brecon, did not use the coat of arms of Rhys Goch, Lord of Ystrad Yw, Brecknockshire, which is : Argent, a dragon's head erased, vert, holding in it's mouth a bloody hand. (Used by the Lewis Family of Dan-y-Parc, Llangottock Crickhowell, Co. Brecon; and Lewis of Warner Hall, VA); but rather the arms of Bleddyn ap Maenyrch, Lord of Brecknockshire: Sable, a chevron between three bloody spearheads, argent. Some of their descendants, including Sir William Lewis, Baronet, of Llangorse, bore either this or a modification of this coat. (See Burke, Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies, p. 313, and Morant, General Armory Two, p. 101; along with Burke, General Armory, p.605, Lewis of Bristol and London, and p. 606, Lewis of Seatown, Co. The Pedigree of Richard (ap) Lewis of Dan-y-Parc, Llangattock Crickhowell, Co. Brecon (D 1627),is given in Bradney, "A History of Monmouthshire" Vol. 1, pp. 338-9, and in the same volume, on p. 207, is give the pedigree of some of the descendants of his grandson and heir, Richard Lewis (D 1678)of Dan-y-Parc, under the heading of "Lewis of Ty-Hir" (in Llantilio Pertholey parish, Monmouthshire). On p. 337 Bradney states that they are the only known surviving family with an unquestioned male descent from Rhys Goch of Ystrad Yw.

The will of Richard (ap) Lewis of Llangattock Crickhowell, Gent. dated 15 March 1627/28 and proved 19 April 1628, mentions, among others, in addition to his grandson and heir, Richard Lewis, son of his deceased eldest son, William (Lewis), his other sons, Thomas (Pritchard) (= ap Richard), Edward (Prichard) and his grandson, John Lewis (son of his deceased son Lewis (Prichard) (In Lewis, "Lewis Patriarchs of Early VA and MD", pp.75-6).

It is this grandson, baptised 22 Feb. 1591/2 at St. Telio's church Llantilio Pertholey parish, Monmouthshire, as John, son of Lewis Rycketts (= Richards = Prichard), who is thought to be the emigrant to Virginia, who settled on Poropotank Creek and died in 1657.

Lewis Family of Warner Hall?Now there was a JOHN LEWIS who has better claims than either Robert or Major William Lewis to be considered the propositus of the family of Warner Hall. This was JOHN LEWIS who patented 100 acres in Warwick county at the dead of Deep Creek, and in 1653 patented 250 acres on a branch of Poropotank Creek, in Glouchester county, which branch was then called Lewis? Creek but formerly Totopotomoy?s Creek. At the foot of the later patent are given the names of those on account of whose importation he was entitled to the land (i.e., 50 acres for each), viz., JOHN LEWIS, probably himself; LYDIA LEWIS, probably his wife; William Lewis, Edward Lewis and John Lewis, Jr. (probably his sons). ?

Accordingly 3 John3 Lewis, of Warner Hall, son of 2 Major John2 Lewis and Isabella his wife, who was probably son of 1 JOHN1 LEWIS and LYDIA his wife, who first settled on Porpotank Creek in 1653, was born November 30, 1669, and departed this life November 14, 1725. He married Elizabeth Warner, daughter of Col. Augustine Warner and Mildred Read his wife?

Shows that JOHN LEWIS was born 1594 in Monmuthshire, Wales. He died August 21, 1657. He was first found in America by a patent of 250 acres July 1, 1663 at the head of the Porpotanke Creek in Glouchester County, Virginia. He married LIDIA.

Their children were Col. John Lewis, Edward Lewis, William Lewis & possibly others

Lewis Tombstones were found in 1948. The stones are located in a cemetary near Plain View in the current King and Queen county VA on the west side of the Poropotank Creek. The location has been described as .3 miles east of the Gloucester-West Point Highway and .4 miles from the Poropotank Creek.. The site of the original Lewis homesite is believed to have been about 100 yards from the graves as pieces of old brick and pottery have been found scattered in the field west of the creek.

John Lewis and his sons, through good marriages, and importing persons to Virginia amassed a large amount of property. John started with a large plantation, his son John married into the Warner family and inherited Warner Hall, and Edward Lewis accummulated 1500 acres through the import of people.

The Pedigree of Richard (ap) Lewis of Dan-y-Parc, Llangattock Crickhowell, Co. Brecon (D 1627),is given in Bradney, "A History of Monmouthshire" Vol. 1, pp. 338-9, and in the same volume, on p. 207, is give the pedigree of some of the descendants of his grandson and heir, Richard Lewis (D 1678)of Dan-y-Parc, under the heading of "Lewis of Ty-Hir" (in Llantilio Pertholey parish, Monmouthshire).On p. 337 Bradney states that they are the only known surviving family with an unquestioned male descent from Rhys Goch of Ystrad Yw.

The will of Richard (ap) Lewis of Llangattock Crickhowell, Gent.dated 15 March 1627/28 and proved 19 April 1628, mentions, among others, in addition to his grandson and heir, Richard Lewis, son of his deceased eldest son, William (Lewis), his other sons, Thomas (Pritchard) (= ap Richard), Edward (Prichard) and his grandson, John Lewis (son of his deceased son Lewis (Prichard) (In Lewis, "Lewis Patriarchs of Early VA and MD", pp.75-6).

It is this grandson, baptised 22 Feb. 1591/2 at St. Telio's church Llantilio Pertholey parish, Monmouthshire, as John, son of Lewis Rycketts (= Richards = Prichard), who is thought to be the emigrant to Virginia, who settled on Poropotank Creek and died in 1657. http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/lewis/13104/
