About John Speight
In 1740 John Speight moved to Contentnea Creek, NC with father Francis and brother Joseph to work a land grant purchased for John.
In 1751 John Speight built Speights Bridge over the Contentnea Creek in Dobbs County, NC and for years collected tolls. The community was renamed Speights Bridge and is still in existence today. http://roadsidethoughts.com/nc/speights-bridge-xx-greene-profile.htm
When the French & Indian War broke out In 1754 John and his brother Joseph enlisted as privates in the local Chowan County Militia. They were the first SPEIGHTs to serve in the military and fought under Captain Charles King.
