About John Pabenham

  1. John de Pabenham - b. bef 1216 (as he did homage for the lands of his father (Hugh) on 20 Dec. 1237 (see Close Rolls (1237-1242), p. 16)); d. shortly bef. 7 Dec. 1247 (see Close Rolls (1247-1251), pp. 13, 14). Wife: Eleanor de St.Remy - b. between 1204 (she was in wardship on 13 Apr. 1224, see Rot. Fin. temp. Henry III (1216-1246), p. 115) and 1222 (she appears as a holder of land in 1242-1243; see Lib. Feodorum (Testa de Neville), pt. 2, p. 867); d. shortly bef. 22 Jun 1249 (see Close Rolls (1247-1251), p. 175).

2. John de Pabenham (son of John & Eleanor, immediately above) - b. aft 1228 (still in wardship on 25 Jun 1249 (see Close Rolls (1247-1251), pp. 223-224)) but likely(?) bef. 1233 (given that his son/heir, John, was reported to be of full age in 1269); d. shortly bef. 12 Apr 1269 (see Cal. Inq. P.M. ser. 1, vol. 1, #693, p. 220). The abstract of this post mortem inquisition suggests that he was married to a daughter of Ralph de Morin.
3. John de Pabenham (son of John and NNN de Morin, immediately above) - b. ca. 1248 (said to be of age at his father's death; see immediately above); d. shortly bef. 12 Feb 1322(NS) (see Cal. Inq. P.M., ser. 1, vol. 6, #311, pp. 179-180).
---1st Wife: Katherine NNN. (see George E. Woodbine, "Pakenham's Case," 38 Yale L. J. 775 (1929) (quoting extensively from the plea rolls of a 1368 case filed by Laurence Pabenham, and indicating that John had 2 wives, the first being Katherine (who was mother of John), and the second being Elizabeth (who was mother of Thomas); the pleadings incorrectly state that Laurence's great-grandfather's name was Hugh de Pabenham (when he actually was his great-grandfather's grandfather)). Katherine and John appear to have had 2 children: (a) Aline (b. bef. 1279 (she appears to have been of age bef. 1300; see Cal. Pat. Rolls (1292-1301), p. 521); d. shortly bef. 3 May 1330 (see Cal. Fine Rolls, vol. 4, p. 171)); and (b) John (his father's heir; see #4, below). [I know nothing more about this Katherine but certainly wish I did.]
---2nd Wife: Elizabeth de Clifford - b. aft 1272; d. aft 1 Dec 1346; married between May 1302 & 1305. [I'm not going into the sources for information about her life here, as she and her children are much discussed on various webpages.] Elizabeth and John appear to have had 4 children: (a) Thomas (his mother's heir); (b) Margaret; (c) Edward; and (d) Elizabeth.
(N.B.: Cal. Inq. Misc., vol. 2, #1965, pp. 492-494, refers to Thomas as son of Elizabeth and John, but refers to John only as son of John.)
4. John de Pabenham (son and heir of John & Katherine, immediately above) - b. ca. 1282 (said to be 40 years of age at his father's death, see immediately above); d. shortly bef. 26 Jan 1331(NS) (see Cal. Fine Rolls, vol. 4, p. 231; Cal. Inq. P.M., ser. 1, vol. 7, #381, pp. 272-273).
---1st Wife: Agnes de Pateshull (daughter of the Simon de Pateshull who died shortly before 2 Dec 1295 (see Cal. Inq. P.M. ser. 1, vol. 3, #269, pp. 232-234), by what I hypothesize to have been a wife of his before Isabel de Stonegrave (his widow, whom (according to Cokayne's "Complete Peerage," vol. 10, p. 315 (1945)) he married some time after Jan. 1287(NS), which would make it unlikely for Agnes, who married John de Pabenham before her father's death (see Vict. County History: Beds., vol. 3, pp. 40-43 (Bletsoe Parish) (1912)), to have been born of the marriage to Isabel)). Agnes, who d. shortly bef 10 Jan 1313(NS), and John appear to have had no children (see Cal. Inq. P.M., ser. 1, vol. 3, #376, p. 209).
---2nd Wife: Joan de la Plaunche; married bef. 19 Nov 1314 (see Lathbury v. Pabenham fine (CP 25/1/18/66 #28) re: land in Bucks. (Emberton, Fillgrave, & Olney)) ; d. shortly bef 6 Sept 1347 (see Cal. Fine Rolls, vol. 6, pp. 49-50; see also https://uh.edu/waalt/index.php/Inquisitions_Post_Mortem_in_Common_L... (1347 item)). [I don't know why this inquisition doesn't appear in the published Calendars.] John & Joan appear to have had 3 children: (a) John (heir; b. ca. 1317 (said to be 15 years of age at his father's death, see immediately above); d. 12 Jun 1349 (see Cal. Inq. P.M., ser. 1, vol. 9, #181, pp. 165-166)); (b) James ((heir of his older brother); b. ca. 1318 (said to be 31 years of age at his brother's death, see immediately preceding); d. 21 Jun 1360 (see Cal. Inq. P.M., ser. 1, vol. 10, #580, p. 456)); and (c) Edmund (b. aft 1318).
