About John McElveen

Biography

We know the family "McIlvaines"" left Scotland, some going to County Down/Tyrone in Northern Ireland, and from there immigrated to several colonies, mainly Pennsylvania. There was however a group that we see in Argyll Scotland. John for one is awarded a grant of land in Charleston in 1737 and this is the family that seems to be the descendants of South Carolina.

Sarah Clark's family immigrated to Northern Ireland (County Tyrone) from Ayr. He was one of his parent's first 3 children born in Scotland and brought with them to Northern Ireland during The Time of the Persecution when England aggressively forced them to leave the Church of Scotland (Presbyterians) and join the Church of England (Episcopalians) [3]. So, unlike his ancestral home in Ayr where his family were Presbyterian Highlanders [4]and Lairds of the House of Grimmet, In Ulster, they were tenants renting 5 acres of farmland where his parents ultimately died and were buried.

Robert was the first of their children to leave Northern Ireland and move to the colonies where he acquired his farm in New Jersey.(See Profile). Robert sold his property 1723 and moved to a colony in South Carolina.

However, it seems our ancestor John lived in Argyll [See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argyll#Name] Scotland, married and was given a land grant in Charleston SC in 1737. The following is John's family.

Family and Property

John McIlvane married Janet in Lochgoilhead And Kilmorich,Argyll, Scotland 23 Dec 1726 [6] and they immigrated to Williamsburg South Carolina.

His son, Adam seems to have settled in Charleston which was a major port, John chose to move to Williamsburg outside of Charleston when he was awarded a Land Grant in 1737 [7].

Together they had the following children:

  • 1) Elizabeth b. 1720 b. Kilmorich, Argyllshire, Scotland [8]
  • 2) Rebecca b. 1722 in Kilmorich, Argyllshire, Scotland d. 1753 In Williamsburg [9]
  • 3) Jane b. 1724 in Kilmorich, Argyllshire, Scotland [10]
  • 4) Adam b. 1725 Kilmorich, Argyllshire, Scotland d. 1785 Charleston SC [11]
  • 5) Margaret b. 1726 Kilmorich, Argyllshire, Scotland d. 1779 [12]

Research Notes

See House of Grimmet published in Rootsweb:

  • John was awarded a Land Grant in Williamsburg South Carolina in 1737 [13]
  • As John was awarded the Land Grant in Williamsburg South Carolina, there are then indications that he was born in Ayrshire Scotland. More research is needed, but It does seem they are part of the McElveens that married into the House of Cunningham

Dispute of Origins from Sarah Michelle Popchoke

Evidence needed to support as son of John Mcilvaine & Sarah Clark

Each descendant was matched and in the process of being mapped. We've transferred profiles to Geni, and will attempt to complete and document the process when we've collected enough samples.
