About John Holloway, Sr., of VA and TN
John Holloway Sr. of Virginia and Tennessee was born about 1739 or earlier, presumably in Virginia. He owned property first in Pittsylvania, Henry, and then in Franklin County, though he never moved among these counties – it was the county line that was moving beneath him. His home was on Doe Creek, just west of Pigg River. His name appears on property records there from the early 1770s through 1804. Many of these were legacy references, referring to John's property after he had left the area, perhaps signifying that a family member continued to live on the property after he had moved away. John's home on Doe Creek was formed into Henry County in 1777, and then he appears in 1778 in the part of North Carolina that became Tennessee. John appears in records of Pittsylvania/Henry County in close association with Charles Holloway, his likely brother, and then John and Charles appear together again in Washington Co., NC/TN. Capt. Charles Holloway died before 10 May 1782, perhaps in the Revolutionary War. John Holloway was the administrator of his estate in Jonesborough, Washington County. Charles Holloway also left an estate in Henry Co., VA, which began to be settled in Feb. 1783. It is probable that these two estates were for the same Charles Holloway, brother of John. John moved to Sullivan Co., NC/TN by at least 1787, where he lived on the North Fork of the Holston River, just south of Moccasin Gap, Virginia. His next-door neighbor there was William Tredway, a former neighbor of his in Pittsylvania/Henry County. John's wife in Sullivan County was Elizabeth, her maiden name unknown. John died in Sullivan County before 1 Jan. 1795. He was the apparent father of two sons, John Holloway Jr. of Sullivan and Morgan Cos., TN and William Holloway of Pulaski Co., KY. John Sr. purchased 73.5 acres in Sullivan County in 1794 from Joseph Crockett, uncle of Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett later lived on Buffalo River in Lawrence Co., TN. His immediate neighbors there by 1820 included descendants of William Holloway of Pulaski Co., KY. It thus seems likely that the same Holloway and Crockett families were neighbors together in both Sullivan and Lawrence Cos., TN.
