Revolutionary War and Pension Records for John Holley

Six John Holly/Holley’s are reported in the Revolutionary War records from the Wilmington District of North Carolina which, at the time, included Duplin/Sampson County.1 All were privates. All were in the militia except John Holley, Jr. of the Continental Army. Two died in the war, both at Rockfish/Heron’s Bridge. John Holley, Jr., died on Sept 16, 1782, and the other John Holly died Aug. 2, 1781, but is not identifiable in the family tree.

One other identifiable soldier from the Duplin/Sampson area was John Henry Holley, son of James and Sarah Holley and grandson of John and Sarah Church Holley. James was the brother of John Holley II (wife Rebecca) and Rebecca. John Henry also fought at Rockfish/Heron’s Bridge, but survived and was discharged in 1781.2 3

In his 1831 handwritten pension application (#S21302), John Henry stated that he was born 1751, Sampson Co., NC, served three tours, and migrated to TN in 1818. He was not able to produce the needed documents because they were destroyed when his house burned down, but he was pensioned at the rate of $41.88 per annum for one-year 17 days service as a private in the North Carolina militia. He died circa 1834 in TN.4
