About John Hamilton

JOHN HAMILTON

Fake Genealogy

At least one pedigree published by WikiTree claims that John Hamilton, here treated, is the same person as the man of who was booked to marry Jonet Young in 1717, at Hamilton in Lanarkshire, Scotland. WikiTree However, it seems quite unlikely that this child survived into adulthood. Certainly, he was the eldest son John Hamilton of Allanshaw and as such he should have succeeded his father at Allanshaw. The fact of the matter is this, though, it was his younger brother William Hamilton of Allanshaw who succeeded.

The Question of Identity

John Hamilton, here treated, is the eldest son of John Hamilton of Allanshaw. The name of his mother is not recorded in his baptismal record but there is good reason to believe that she was Janet Urie. [ Note ] He was born before 11 January 1691, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Blantyre in Lanarkshire, Scotland. His baptismal record reads as follows: "John : son of John Hamilton of Allanshaw in Hamilton parish." [National Records of Scotland, Blantyre Baptisms, reference OPR.624/1] Image of Baptismal Record

Note: Notwithstanding the absence of his mother's name from his baptismal record, John Hamilton, here treated, was evidently a lawful child. Certainly, he is not identified as an unlawful child. If he had been unlawful then the name of his mother would surely have been mentioned, after all she would have been the subject of church discipline. With this important fact in mind it should be noticed that Janet Urie was booked to marry John Hamilton of Allanshaw on 28 January 1687, and that she was still alive in June 1700, when the baptism of their youngest son William was registered at Hamilton.
