John A. Goolsby was born in 1802 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia to Thomas Jackson and Margarett Marr Goolsby, and he was their eldest son. He married Rebecca Ellis Thompson, a widow with three children, on January 5, 1825 in Dallas County, Alabama. Like the rest of the nation, the Goolsby family began to move westward, and by the mid 1830's they were living in Mississippi where several children were born.
The Goolsby family began to move again, and John's family as well as his siblings and his mother Margarett arrived in Texas in December 1839. They settled in Houston County where the land was fertile and the wildlife abundant. John was a successful farmer, and he and Rebecca raised a large family of nine children, six boys and three girls.
John A. Goolsby died in July 1852 at the age of 50 and is buried in Houston County along with his wife, Rebecca. They were some of the early pioneering families who helped to settle Houston County when Texas was still a republic.
