Military* Served in the military between 1812 and 1813; scout in the Indian War and was a soldier in the War of 1812 John Deem's name appears on a roll of CAPT. William Luce's Company (Probably from Miami Co.) Served from August 23, 1812, until February 22, 1813. Census* He and Mary Magdalena Diehl appeared on the census of 1820 at Madison Township, Butler County, OH; John Deem head of house. Free white males between 16 & 18 1, free white males 16 and under 26 1, free white males 45 and upwards 1, free white females 10 and under 16 1, free white females 45 and upwards 1.2 Will* Johann Nicholas Deem left a will on 7 March 1835 at Butler County, OH; names his wife, Mary, as his sole beneficiary. Joseph Deem and John H. Deem are listed as executors, but their relationship to their father is not stated in the will. The will was witnessed by Robert Dine and George Leiber. Interestingly enough, the will is signed "Johan N. Diehm".

The inventory of John Deems estate provide some interesting insight into the life of a poor farmer in early Ohio. At the time of his death, his estate was estimated at $410.50, $300 of which were outstanding debts owed to him by five people, including his sons, Joseph Deem and John H. Deem. After settlement of the estate, the widow of the deceased was due $343.77, which included the unpaid debts. The Inventory of John Deem's Estate The State of Ohio, Butler County

Before me, Isaac McKinney, a Justice of the Peace in and for said County, personally came Joseph Hinkle, Jacob Woolford, & Robert Dine appraisers of the estate of John Deem Deceased late of Madison Township in said County, & were sworn well & truly to appraise all the goods & chattels of said estate which shall be presented to them for appraisement by Joseph Deem and John H. Deem Executors of said estate. Given under my hand this 14th day of November, 1835. Isaac McKinney J. P.
