About Johan Nicolas Copple, of Maryland

Not the same as Johann Nicholas Keppel, of Pennsylvania

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Copple-27

Johann Nicolas (Johann) "Nickolas" Copple was born in 1735 in Germany, possibly in Bayern.[1]. Seen as Altötting, Upper Bavaria, Bavaria, Germany.

He passed away in 1807 in Rowan, North Carolina.[2]

According to the dates and locations of the births of his children, NIcolas came to colonial America sometime between 1759 and 1762. However, he cannot be found in the Maryland Colonial Census of 1776.

By 1790, Nicholas was in Frederick, Maryland.[3] In the house hold are reported 2 free white males over 16, one free white male under 16 and 4 free white females.

Nicholas's probate files includes a will dated 15 December 1807,[2] so he likely died sometime after, not on that exact day.

Mentioned in his will were his sons

  1. Nicholas Copple and
  2. Philip Copple as executors, daughters
  3. Mary Fox and
  4. Barbary Maner, sons
  5. Jacob Copple and
  6. William Copple
  7. and his grandchidlren by William: Philip Copple and Susanna Lambeth.
  8. Also mentoned as receiving an equal share of his estate are the heirs of Christina Young, but he does not indicate her relationship. It is likely she is a daughter who is deceased.

No wife is listed, so she must have pre-deceased him.

Research Notes

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wilhelm-26

There has been some confusion between Johann Nicholas Koppel)of Pennsylvania and Johan Nicolas Copple, of Maryland/North Carolina. Both are linked to women with a similar name, Maria Anna Catherine Wilhelm and Anna Maria (Williams) Keppel (1736-1820) and their marriage dates have been conflated.

It is possible that the two wives have goten mixed up. Some sources cite a marriage date for Maria Anna WIlhelm abd NIcolas Copple on 28 September 1851 in Bedminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania while the other NIcholas is recorded as marrying Maria Williams on 28 September 1856 in Tohickon, Bedminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania.[2]. While it is entirely possible that one man married Anna Maria Williams and the other married Maria Anna Wilhelm, it is unlikely they were married on the same day in the same place, 6 years apart. It seems more likely that someone mixed up the two couples and then reocrded the marriage date wrong. hsi will be solved if we can find a marriage record for NIcholas Copple and Maria Anna or of him marrying someone else to disprove this connection.

This Maria Anna had children whose birth dates are reported as being between 1853 and 1857 in Germany, so if these are accurate, this couple would not have been married in Pennsylvania in 1851.

Also, this Maria Anna has a birthplace of Herbetzheim, Alsace, which is where Johann Nicholas Koppel is from. So if this birthplace proves to be accurate for her, it si unlikely that Johan Nicolas Copple is her husband.

More research is needed to work out if this is actually one woman or two. Patterson-15268
