About Joan Yates

It is impossible for her to be the daughter of John Gater and Joan (Morley?) of the "Assurance" (1635). The latter hadn't even been born yet.

Joane (Latin form Johanna) Yates received grants in her own name of 200 acres in Elizabeth River (now Nansemond River) parish, Lower Norfolk Co., December 6, 1652, and of 300 acres in the same parish, in 1652.

She mentions land she received from her grandfather and was apparently the Joan Jobe transported to Virginia with John Yates on the "America." A Joan Jobe was an indentured servant to Thomas Davis, May 22, 1637, who had a headright on her on the south side of the east branch of the Elizabeth River in Upper New Norfolk County.

In 1653 she sued for her third of the land left her by her deceased husband, together with their "chief mansion." As part of her defense against the prosecutor (Richard Yates) she exhibited an inventory of her husband's estate taken November 13, 1648 by Thomas Sayer, Richard Smith, James Warner and John Finch (total value: 19,751 lbs. tobacco).

She left a will written Oct. 22, 1664, probated Oct. 15, 1666, naming her son Richard Yates and daughter Frances Ballantine administrators.
