Joan Cokayne

Joan or Jane D'abridgecourt was one of 5 daughters of Sir John D'abridgecourt & his wife [name variously as Maud, Matilda or Margery!].

When her father died in 1415, Joan was named in his will as the wife of Sir John Cokayne/Cockayne.Her husband was killed fighting in a campaign in France the same year.

Joan was still alive in 1439, when she was embroiled in a legal fight over her dower rights with her stepmother Isabel [nee Shirley] Cokayne [who confusingly, was the mother to yet another Sir John Cokayne, half brother of Joan's deceased husband.

• Jane Dabridgecourt was the daughter of Sir John Dabridgecourt.2 She married Sir John Cokayne, son of Sir Edmund Cokayne and Elizabeth de Harthill.1 She died, without issue.1

He had 2 additional sons (illegitimate) (John; & William).1,2 Sir John Dabridgecourt, Keeper of the Tower of London & Calais Castle left a will on 20 July 1415; Requesting burial at Elvaston, Derbyshire; or in Dale Abbey, Derbyshire.1,2 His estate was probated on 8 November 1415.1,2
