• Jean-Baptiste and his parents came from Landau in the province Bavarian Palatinate in Germany near the border of France. This part was under French occupation from 1700 to 1815. He went to South Africa in 1780 as an ordinary soldier in the service of VOC in Cape Town. He was a corporal in 1784 and the following year sergeant. In 1791 he obtained his citizenship. He died as a teacher at Paarl. When he arrived his name was spelt Schultz. His son John Frederick, however, in later years changed the spelling to SCHOULTZ which is the French spelling..

One illeg. son, Frans (8.1.1792), by Pamela of the C., sl. of Johannes Gysbertus v. Reenen (Test. CJ 1199: 1). ~ 10.6.1792 Catharina Maria Heger. 3 children. Divorced 1799.
