Evidence from the National Records of Scotland

5 July 1627: Charter issued under the Great Seal of Scotland by which Charles I, King of Scotland, confirms to Patrick Bruce, feudatory of Newtoun, and Jonet Jacksoun, his future spouse, possession of various parts of the land called Newtoun, in the barony of Bothkenner and Sheriffdom of Stirling. The lands in question had previously been resigned by Patrick Bruce in order to obtain a new grant in favour of himself and his future spouse. His resignation was made with the consent of Jean Flemyng, who retained her own liferent interest. Patrick Bruce and Jonet Jacksoun were to hold this land in conjunct fee and liferent. The land in question was destined to pass to their lawful male heirs, whom failing to the lawful heirs of William Bruce of Stenhous. RMS 1620-33: charter number 1101
