About James Widney, II of Killymurry
James Widney the younger, referred to here as James Widney II, was born circa 1700, probably in Killymurry, County Monaghan. On 11 May 1724, he entered into a deed with his father, James Widney the elder, which recites that the younger James would marry Ann Carlisle and would receive from his father one-half of the townland of Killymurry. Ann's uncle, Thomas Donaldson, would pay the sum of fifty pounds sterling to James. The deed relates that the land was held by virtue of a lease from Thomas Marlo and Thomas Croffton, Esq., along with half of the houses and improvements thereon. The 1724 deed was "memorialized", meaning copied verbatim, in 1744. It was registered in 1745. The deed memorial strongly suggests that James Widney II had recently died and that title to the property was being confirmed for his heir. The heir of course would not have been the James Widney who was born in 1753 and, instead, must have been an intervening generation whose birth is estimated at about 1728. The father of the 1753 James Widney was also named James, and he married Mary Wilson sometime about 1750. The 1753 James sold Killymurry in 1784, the very year he and most of his siblings left for America.
James Widney IV, that he sold Killymurry in 1784, the very year he left Ireland for America.
