Brother of Stephen Skiff, Nathaniel (Skiffe) Skiff, Sarah (Skiffe) Freeman, Bathshua (Skiffe) Bourne, Mary (Skiffe) Mayhew, Patience (Skiffe) Bourne, Miriam Skiff, Benjamin (Skiffe) Skiff and Nathan (Skiffe) Skiff. Husband of Sarah (Barnard) Skiff — married about March 1677 in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Father of Beulah Skiff, Sarah (Skiff) Long, Patience (Skiff) Swain, Mary (Skiff) Giles and Hannah (Skiff) Daggett. Died: June 6, 1724 in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

His connection with the Vineyard is detailed in Vol. I., p. 474 and Vol. II, Annals of W. T., pp. 72-3. He m. (1) ELIZABETH NEIGHBOR of Boston 18 Nov. 1659 from whom he was divorced 1670 and (2) SARAH BARNARD of Nan. (espoused Mch. 1677), who was b. abt. 1648 and d. 24 Oct. 1732.

Biography

James was born 12 Sept 1638 in Sandwich, Massachusetts, son of James Skiffe and Mary Reeves.<ref>Sandwich Vital Records, Births, p 167 in Mayflower Descendant, 14:167</ref> he died probably in Nantucket about 1720-1724. He married (1) 18 Nov 1659 Elizabeth Tabor (or Neighbor, per Banks) who died soon (one source saysthey divorced in 1670<ref>Charles Edward Banks, The History of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts, Boston: George H. Dean (1911), 3:433, citing Vol. I., p. 474 and Vol. II, Annals of W.T., pp. 72-3. </ref>), leaving no children; he married (2) about March 1677 Sarah Barnard, daughter of Robert Barnard of Roxbury; she died 24 Aug 1732.<ref>Pierson, James Skiff of London, England, and Sandwich, Mass., 1895, p3</ref> James died June 6, 1724 in Sandwich, Massachusetts. :“Although one of four proprietors of Tisbury, yet his relation to the town was of a transient character.” His property passed to Nathaniel Wing before 1677. His participation in 1673 in the “Dutch rebellion” may have been the cause of his departure. He removed to Nantucket about 1677." :"...He became a deacon of the church and was living in 1719 when he visited Chilmark with one of his married daughters. He was then eighty-one years of age, having been born Sept. 12, 1638, and his death occurred not long after.
