About James Bryan Cullen
First Fleet ship Scarborough
Tried in Old Bailey, 2nd Middlesex Jury along with Eleanor Welch (he described her as his wife) for Theft: Simple Grand Larceny valued at 130 shillings. Eleanor was acquitted but James was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Africa. The African settlement was scrapped (due to the high mortality rate) while James was awaiting transportation. It was decided that the convicts would then be re-routed to Australia for the Grand Botany Bay Venture. He sailed on the 'Scarborough' (one of 11 ships in the First Fleet) leaving Portsmouth on May 13 1787 and arrived at Port Jackson on Jan 26 1788. Apr 6 1785, London, England
