The Wellington Regimental History records that on the 1st Oct 1916 the 2nd battalion of the Regiment mounted a successsful attack on EAUCOURT L'ABBAYE and was relieved at nightfall by the 1st Battalion Wellington Regiment. This was the last action by the regiment at the battle of SOMME. As he was wounded on the 1st Oct 1916 the above was in all probability the one which he suffered a gunshot wound to the spine resulting in his death later on the 13th Oct 1916. Grave Ref/ Panel No. I.H.14. Location of the town of Abbeville is on the main road from Paris to Boulogne, about 80 kilometers south of Boulogne. On reaching Abeeville from Boulogne on the N1 at the roundabout, take the right turn immediately before the Boulogne Road direction.

James Cattermole enlisted in the Army in 1915 as Private 10/3503 in the Wellington Onfantry Battalion after a training period in Trentham sailed on the H.M.N.Z.T. No. 37 - SS MAUNGANUI for Eygpt and then France. There are also copies of two letters he sent to his brother Henry and sisters Magaret. The 2nd letter was written 8 weeks before his death and was written on a postcard which had French silk embroidery on the reverse side. He states in it that they were out of the trences now. and having a good time over there.
