About Hans Jacob Reger, (Sr.)

Note to researchers: I changed the place of baptism from "Benken, Basel, Switzerland" to "Basel, Switzerland" because the original name didn't make sense. There are two towns named Benken in Switzerland, one in the canton of St. Gallen, and the other in the canton of Zürich. Both are predominately German-speaking. Normally, one would expect that he would have been baptized in the town where he was born, but the family may have moved to Basel in preparation for emigrating to America, which they did in 1737. Also, I changed his birth date to 1734 because he would not have been baptized on the day he was born (and definitely not in a different city).

Known as Jacob (his Rufname). His last name was spelled many different ways. Brought the first Bible to Barbour County, now owned by West Virginia Wesleyan College. Photo and information about Jacob Rieger's Bible

Probably spoke predominantly German.

Apparently arrived 1737 on the "Virtuous Grace", arriving in Philadelphia per story "Carolina" per US/Canada Arrival Index
