About Israel ben Moshe Benveniste

Rabbi Israel ben Moses Benveniste (d. 1627), married the daughter of Rabbi Joshua Soncino (d. 1569), a leading scholar in Istanbul and the author of Naḥala li-Yhoshu‘a (A Portion for Joshua), a collection of responsa (Istanbul, 1731). Israel had three sons, Eliezer, Joshua Raphael, and Ḥayyim, and three daughters. One of the daughters married Isaac, the son of Rabbi Aaron ben Joseph Sasson (1550 or 1555–1626), the author of Torat Emet (Torah of Truth; Venice, 1626). The other two also married rabbis. The eldest son, Eliezer, was the father of Israel ben Eliezer (d. 1677), a rabbi who wrote a collection of sermons (derushim) entitled Bet Yisraʾel (House of Israel; Istanbul, 1678).
