Great Grandma Hannah (Finnila) Hannu was born in Vaasan Laani in Finland in 1874. She came to michigan,, Sponsored by her brother at about the age of 18. She worked in a boarding house, doing all the men's washing on a scrub board, made beds and cleaned rooms, washed dishes and helped with the cooking, all for $5.00 a month. She was told working conditions were better and the wages were higher in Telluride, Colorado where the men were working in the gold mines. So she went there and met Isaac Hannu and married him around 1895. One girl was born there who died as an infant of pneumonia and is buried there. He heard of the Alaska gold rush and went there and when he came back, She met him in San Francisco and they came on to Astoria, Oregon, where he finished on the Columbia river and in Alaska fot about five years. Three children were born in Astoria- Wayne, Siame and Walter. They bought a farm in Lewis and Clark where another son, Neil was born. She became afflicted with arthritis and they moved to prosser, Washington after 10 years on the farm to see if a change of climate would help her. They lived in Prosser about 1 year and then bought a farm in Damascus, Oregon near Portland where they lived 2 to 3 years. Then came back to Lewis and Clark to the origial farm. The big old house burned to the ground, the built another on the tideland. Then they built a house on a some hill that they owned. She lived there until her death in 1933, completely crippled by artritis. Great Grandpa Isaac Hannu was born in Tornio, Finland in 1872. He came to the USA at about the age of 16 and went to work in a gold mine in Telluride, Colorado. From there he followed th gold rush to Alaska and upon returning from there, came to Astoria, Oregon where he fished the Columbia River and in the summers went to Alaska to fish. He married Hannah Finnila in Telluride in 1895. From here on, the rest of his life is written up in hers. He developed Diabetes and wasnt well for several years before his death in 1935 Thank You Louise Carlson (Hannu)for this story
