Biography:
Born c. 1876 as In ge gi jig to father Aniwabi and an unknown mother, John Martin married twice and had three children. His first wife Annie Thompson Martin was the mother of all three children and they seem to have been married for many years. It was Annies 2nd marriage. She had a daughter Be-wash 'Blanche' Turrish (Cournoyer) by her first husband.

His 1st wife Annie Thompson Martin appears to have left him in c.1920 and remarried Charles Sun, with whom she bore Harvey Sun. Her youngest son NN Martin was living with her and Charles Sun when he died before June 30, 1922. In the 1923 census, John Martin was living with his daughter Eleanor. It is unclear why she left but in the 1921 census Annie St. Jermain is shown as his wife, for this year only, after which John is shown living with his daughter Eleanor for many years.

According to the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson states that John Martin was committed from Lac du Flambeau on March 4, 1933, and diagnosed with psychosis (psychosis is a term used to describe a group of symptoms that cause a person to lose touch with reality, making it difficult to differentiate between what is real and what is not). John was 57 years old at this time.

When the Canton Asylum was closed John was transferred on December 22, 1933, to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C., where he seems to have died. In the 1940 census of St. Elizabeths, he is shown as a patient/inmate at age 83. He is NOT indicated as being buried in the East Campus Cemetery at St. Elizabeths.

His profile is part of the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canton_Asylum.

Research Notes:
-Sometimes known as John A Martin, the "A" coming from his father's name Aniwabi
