  • NOTES
  1. He arrived at the Cape with his brother’s family in 1844 and entered into a partnership with Henry to purchase Tyger Hoek shortly afterwards.
  2. Following disagreements between the brothers he left TygerHoek and purchased Weltevreden on 21/12/1846
  3. The Genadendal mission superintendent wrote to the Governor that Vigne was an unsuitable candidate for the position of magistrate on grounds of “unsatisfactory moral character and conduct, namely that he had an illegimate family by a woman of the Institute, and his cohabiting with her is publicly known”.
  4. The reasons are not recorded but in 1856 Herbert was appointed a Magistrate in British Kaffraria .
  5. He then became the Commissioner of the Crown Reserve
but fell from grace through his polygamous relationships with '''Chief Phato’s''' granddaughter and the daughter of another chief, and he was promptly retired.  '''In 1854 he had divided part of Weltevreden into 120 long plots for cultivation. This settlement becamre the village of Greyton where he lived on his property “The Bush” for the next forty years.
