About George Haffenden

George & Ann had eleven children, including twins Philemon and Herodia (bn 1788).

George should have been a man of some substance, and in the 1831 Census was shown as "Owner and occupier of a house and shop" in Heathfield. When he died he was described as " Wheelwright and Innkeeper" This would have been at the Old Half Moon Inn which stood beside a road that followed the north boundary of Heathfield Park. The old inn still exists but as a private dwelling, but the main road was moved northwards, possibly in the late 18th century or early 19th century, so that the buildings are now situated at the end of a lane off the main road between the Crown Inn and the T junction on the Hailsham Road. Info from Walter Haffenden suggests the marriage date of George and Ann as 30/05/1770 at Warbleton, Sussex. Left Gamely Land the Lodgeland the Harrares Land and the Burnthouse Field in the parishes of Hellingly Waldron and Heathfield. The Water Corn Mill Garden Orchard and Land in Heathfield and parcells of land in Waldron which was purchased off Richard Foster. Cottages and lands known as Pashegate in Heathfield, the Barns Garden Orchard and Lambs in Waldron in uncle George Haffenden Will dated 1768 on condition he pay his brother Marquick 20 shillings a year.
