The Huguenots were French Protestants who were members of the Reformed Church which was established in 1550 by John Calvin.

The origin of the name Huguenot is uncertain, but dates from approximately 1550 when it was used in court cases against "heretics" (dissenters from the Roman Catholic Church). There is a theory that it is derived from the personal name of Besançon Hugues, the leader of the "Confederate Party" in Geneva, in combination with a Frankish corruption of the German word for conspirator or confederate: eidgenosse. Thus, Hugues plus eidgenot becomes Huguenot, with the intention of associating the Protestant cause with some very unpopular politics.

   Garrett Reasoner, a French Huguenot was born in France or Germany about 1660-1662. It is probable that his great grandfather and family fled France to Germany after the Huguenot hangings at Amboises in 1560 or after the massacre at Barthelomew in 1562. Tradition states that some of the Reasoner family returned to the French homeland after the Edict of Nantes in 1598 while others of the family remained in Germany where are found names of Reisnor and Reussener in Barvia and Nuremburg. A Doctor Nikolaus Reussner was a professor of law at the University of Louvaine where he published a book in 1581.

It is known that after the Revocation of Edict of Nantes in 1685, young Garrett Reasoner fled France to Germany, either to Strasburg or Heidelberg. It is known that he spent some time as a teacher in both communities. In Germany, Garret wed Marie, probably a French Huguenot family whose surname in unknown. She was reported to be a "lady of some means".
Three sons, Christopher, Stephen and Nicholas were born to this union. Tradition states the probability of a fourth son, named Michael, who appears in records of Colonial America in many of the areas and at the approximate time that Nicholas resided in Maryland, Virginia and later in Pennsylvania. There is no proof that Michael was a son of Garett nor is there any to the contrary. Daughters were born to this union but their names are unknown today.
Christopher, Stephen and Nicholas came to America about 1700-1716 and it is believed they landed at Kingston, NY and went Ulster and Duchess Counties. Later Christopher moved on to Montgomery County, NY, Stephen went west and Nicholas in 1725-26 went with the Jost Hite party south into Pennsylvania to settle on "Perkiomen" near Philadelphia. After his marriage to Mary Froman, daughter of Peter Froman who was of the Hite party, they dwelt for a while in Bucks County, Pennsylvania then going to Prince Georges County Maryland, about 1744.
It was in Bucks County that their children Peter, Jacob, Garrett and Susan were born. Removing to Hampshire County, Virginia, Nicholas Reasoner received an original land grant from Lord Fairfax in 1748, on Patterson Creek where raised his family, dying in the year 1796. Christopher who was born, 1697 lived in three centuries, dying in Montgomery County, New York in 1804 at the age of 107 years.
