It was captured by the English in 1346 and ruled by them from 1417 to 1450. As of 1990 the population was 112,846, located on the Orne River about 9 miles inland from the English Channel, Caen was a major port and trade center for the agricultural department. The development of nearby iron mines has enhanced its economy, other industries include steel and textiles. In 1432 Henry VI of England founded a university, and as of today several schools are still there. During the French Revolution the city was a anti-Republican stronghold, the city suffered damaged in June and July of 1944 during the Allied invasion of France, but has been rebuilt since.
