Diego López de Ayala and Ceballos (? - Toledo, ?). Castilian nobleman of the second half of the 14th century belonging to the Casa de Ayala, based in the lands of Toledo. He was the son of Fernán Pérez de Ayala, 13º Señor de Ayala, Mayor of Murcia and his legitimate wife, Elvira Álvarez de Ceballos. He had as his brother Pedro López de Ayala, Major Chancellor of Castilla and Teresa Diaz de Ayala among others.
The data we have about this gentleman is scarce, and although some authors define him as the owner of the Señorío de Cebolla (Toledo),1 it is known that it was his daughter, Elvira de Ayala, who in the company of her husband Fernán Álvarez de Toledo y Loaysa, 2º Señor de Oropesa, acquired said lordship of Cebolla and the Castle of Villalba by purchase in 1396 from Juan Sánchez de Meneses, mayor of the Alcázar de Talavera de la Reina.2

The lordship of Cebolla was a jurisdictional domain founded by Elvira de Ayala y Guzmán in 1398, which included the Toledo town of Cebolla and the castle of Villalba, located within the same term. This lordship remained independent in the hands of the Casa de Ayala, settled in the lands of Talavera de la Reina, until it was absorbed by the county of Oropesa in 1534 on the occasion of the marriage of Beatriz de Monroy y Ayala, 7th lady of Cebolla, with Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Figueroa, 3rd count of Oropesa.
Although some authors and historians of the Modern Age such as Martín de Saavedra defended that Diego López de Ayala was the first owner of the lordship,1 other authors such as Pedro de Salazar y Mendoza did not dare to make such an assertion and postulated that this man was an ancestor of the lords of this town.2 Indeed, it was Alfonso Franco Silva in 1996 who determined that Elvira de Ayala y Guzmán, daughter of the aforementioned Diego López de Ayala, was the first lady to enjoy his property.3
