Ferdinand Magellan, Navigator

Ferdinand Magellan (Portuguese: Fernão de Magalhães; Spanish: Fernando de Magallanes; c. 1480 – April 27, 1521) was a Portuguese explorer. He was born in Sabrosa, in northern Portugal, and served King Charles I of Spain in search of a westward route to the "Spice Islands" (modern Maluku Islands in Indonesia).

Magellan's expedition of 1519–1522 became the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean (then named "peaceful sea" by Magellan; the passage being made via the Strait of Magellan), and the first to cross the Pacific. It also completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth, although Magellan himself did not complete the entire voyage, being killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. Teve filhos de que nada se sabe…dois irmãos, Diogo de Sousa e Duarte de Sousa de Magalhães e pais não definidos. Dizem que nasceu no Porto, sem factos. Certo que possuiu uma casa em Sabrosa.
Casamento com: Beatriz Barbosa, 12.1517, Sevilha. Sua mulher era D. Beatriz Barbosa, filha de um amigo português de Sevilha, Diogo Barbosa, antigo companheiro no Oriente, muito influente naquela cidade espanhola, pai de Duarte Barbosa, que rumou com Fernão na fatídica viagem, que o seria também para ele (Duarte foi morto em Cebu, Filipinas, uns dias antes de Magalhães).

Beatriz morreria antes da chegada dos 18 cadáveres vivos em 1522, sobreviventes da viagem de Magalhães. Tentou-se o seu regresso a Portugal, com aumentos de tença, entretanto, mas Magalhães recusou sempre.

In English called Ferdinand Magellan, "was a Portuguese explorer and Hispanic Monarchy's subject from 1518. He is best known for having planned and led the 1519 Spanish expedition to the East Indies across the Pacific to open a maritime trade route in which he discovered the interoceanic passage bearing thereafter his name and achieved the first European navigation from the Atlantic to Asia. This expedition, where Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan (present-day Philippines) in 1521, resulted in the first circumnavigation of the Earth when one of the expedition's two remaining ships of five eventually returned to Spain in 1522.[5][6]" Wikipedia

Fernão de Magalhães (Sabrosa, primavera de 1480 — Cebu, Filipinas, 27 de abril de 1521) foi um navegador português. Nascido em família nobre, notabilizou-se por ter organizado e iniciado a primeira viagem de circum-navegação ao globo de 1519 até 1522. Em 1505 viajou para as Índias Ocidentais, participando de várias expedições militares.

Em 1512 foi na armada de António de Abreu à descoberta das Molucas, também conhecidas como as Ilhas das Especiarias, mas só o navio de Francisco Serrão, tresmalhado, chegaria às Molucas do norte, produtoras do desejado cravo, pois os demais navios regressariam a Malaca após irem apenas às Molucas do sul ou arquipélago de Banda (Buru, Ambom, Seram) produtoras de noz-moscada e maçã, o que fez com que Magalhães não tivesse conhecimento direto das Molucas do cravo, as mais importantes economicamente à época.

A serviço do rei de Espanha, planeou e comandou a expedição marítima que efectuou a primeira viagem de circum-navegação ao globo. Foi o primeiro a alcançar a Terra do Fogo no extremo sul do continente americano, a atravessar o estreito que hoje leva seu nome e a cruzar o Oceano Pacífico, que nomeou. Em março de 1521, alcançaram a ilha de Ladrões no actual arquipélago de Guam, chegando à ilha de Cebu nas actuais ilhas Filipinas em 7 de abril. Imediatamente começaram as trocas comerciais; boa parte das grandes dificuldades da viagem tinham sido vencidas. Dias depois, porém, Fernão de Magalhães morreu em combate com os nativos na ilha de Mactan, atraído a uma emboscada, sendo morto pelo chefe nativo Lapu-Lapu. A expedição prosseguiu sob o comando de João Lopes Carvalho, deixando Cebu no início de março de 1522. Dois meses depois, seria comandada por Juan Sebastián Elcano.
