Known as Marme to her grandchildren and Granny Great to her great grandchildren, Leigh was born in Adairville, Kentucky and grew up in east Nashville on Riverside Drive. She graduated co-salutatorian from Isaac Litton High School in 1944. She received her B.S. in Social Sciences and her M.A. in Public Administration from George Peabody College for Teachers, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She was the first Registrar of Blair Academy of Music under the direction of Dr. Del Sawyer, and thereafter the Executive Assistant to two Presidents of Peabody College, Dr. John Dunworth and Dr. John Claunch. Marme was an accomplished business woman, seamstress, painter, writer, needle pointer, president of P.T.A., community leader and her children's biggest fan. She played the piano and organ and taught water aerobics at River Rest Estates at eighty years of age. She loved animals especially dogs and rescued countless dogs from puppy mills. As a life-long learner, Marme loved to travel, read and completed cross-word puzzles every day. She was an eternal optimist, always improving the body, mind and spirit and making friends everywhere she went. She loved Jesus, taught her children the Christian faith and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Nashville. Her family extends a special thank you to the staff of Woodcrest at the Blakeford, her loyal friends and family for their visits, flowers, cards, conversations, prayers and tender loving care.
