Queen of Wales

The view that Ethyllt was Merfyn's mother and Nest his wife is held by Davies[9] and many others, including David E. Thornton[7] and Lloyd,[10] who notes the consistency of the genealogies in Jesus College MS 20 and Harleian MS 3859 against the contrary account that Nest was the mother and Ethyllt the wife.

The earliest writers of the history of Wales, from Dr David Powell in 1584 to Jane Williams in 1869, adopted the view of ABT that Nest was the mother of Merfyn Frych. Although she is wholly absent from the Harleian Ms 3859 pedigrees, that manuscript did name the mother of Merfyn Frych as "Etthil merch Cinnan".

Around the final half of the 14th century, a group of pedigrees were set down in Jesus College Ms 20. This is the earliest appearance of a "Nest ferch Cadell m. Brochuael m. Elisse" and she is made the mother of Rhodri Mawr (thus the wife of Merfyn Frych). A number of years later, about 1400, the manuscripts now called Achau Brenhinoedd a Thywysogion Cymru (often abbreviated as ABT) set down the pedigrees of the dynastic kings and princes of Wales. Here, "Nest ferch Gadell ap Brochwal ap Elisse" is cited as the mother of Merfyn Frych (thus the wife of Gwriad ap Elidyr). One might reasonably assume the objective of those medieval genealogists was to introduce a Powys heiress through whom the kingdom of Powys had been inherited by Gwynedd's Merfyn Frych or Rhodri Mawr, and it didn't really matter which.

The genealogies themselves are contained in a number of medieval manuscripts, the most important of which are detailed below.

A: The Harleian genealogies

Which are the earliest surviving document preserved in a single manuscript Harleian MS 3859, bound together with what is known as the 'A' version of the Annales Cambriae. The manuscript itself dates from around 1100, but as the genealogies begin with Owain ap Hywel Dda it is generally presumed that they were originally compiled during his reign (that is between 950 and 987) but are obviously based on oral recollections of a much older date.

B: The Jesus College genealogies

These are contained in the Jesus College MS 20, folios 33r to 41r and draws on the same body of material, but also contains some variations and additions which suggests that it was not directly derived from the Harleian MS. However, the Jesus College manuscript is dated to the late fourteenth century but was probably compiled in the thirteenth century. It is therefore of a much later date than the Harleian genealogies and is therefore considered to be less reliable.

The birthdate of Esyllt verch Cynan is often given as "c. 770", even when she is shown as mother of Merfyn, born "c. 764", as seen below. There is no documentation for either date.

Merfyn Frych

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merfyn was not a member of the traditional dynasty of Gwynedd, the direct male line of Maelgwn Gwynedd, and his succession marked the start of a new dynasty. His claim was apparently based on the fact that his mother, Esyllt, was the daughter of Cynan Dindaethwy ap Rhodri and the niece of Hywel ap Rhodri.
