- Auckland: Ted owned and managed a restaurant in St Kevin's Arcade, Auckland, called The Dutch Mill, 1936. This was such a success that he opened a cabaret nightspot called the Metropole. The Metropole was on upper Queen Street on the corner of City Road, and was a popular dance venue sometimes used for private celebrations.
- Sold the restaurant and cabaret in early 1951 and moved to Matata where he bought the general store, the only business there besides the Post Office and the pub.
- Moved to Tauranga and opened one of its first cafe/bars (late 1950's vogue)
- Moved back to Auckland and started in real estate in Ponsonby (Everson & Boulton), 1970's
At the time it was built in 1938, the Metropole cabaret near the top of Queen Street was Auckland’s largest ballroom, catering to 1500-plus patrons. Renamed the Peter Pan Ballroom in 1952 – after the original Peter Pan moved up from Rutland Street, taking over the £60,000 lease – it mostly catered for private balls, with the music provided by big bands.
Ted had an affair with a Christchurch married woman, Gladys Lavery; they met at the Dutch Mill, and Gladys and her girlfriend were invited to the Metropole. Gladys returned home to Christchurch after a week, not knowing she was carrying Ted's child. On 12 December 1950 Gladys gave birth to a daughter, Kareen Ann. (Kareen Ann McKenzie).
