About Elizabeth "Isabella" Yard

Elizabeth (Miller) Yard (1640 - abt. 1703)

There are many genealogies and family histories[1] that claim John Lewis Jr. (1635 - 1689) married Isabella Warner daughter (sometimes probably daughter) of Augustine Warner Sr. and sister of Augustine Warner Jr. These genealogies have since been proven incorrect.[2]. John married instead Isabella Miller.

Elizabeth "Isabella" Miller, daughter of James Miller, was born August 24, 1640 in New Kent County in the Virginia Colony, Colonial America, and died on February 09, 1704 (63) Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County in the Province of Virginia. She was buried in the Lewis Family Cemetery, Poropotank Creek, King and Queen County, Virginia, United States

Warning

From http://lewis-genealogy.org/genealogy/Lewis/Henrico.htm

There are few records for some of the people we are researching. And, it is natural that we would attempt to connect the disparate Lewis families. Previously, many Lewis records have been attached to the predominant Lewis Family of Warner Hall. Of note, the only proven children of Maj. John Lewis of Chemokins are Edward and Councilor John Lewis of Warner Hall.

The proof of Isabella being a Miller can be found in the two will abstracts below (these abstracts were made from the original records in York Co.):

The Will of James Miller Made: 29 Mar 1678. Proved: 14 Apr 1678. York Co., VA.

  • To my brother[-in-law] Maj. James Lewis...
  • To my sister Isabella, wife of the above mentioned James Lewis...
  • To my nephews Edward and John Lewis...

The Will of James Miller Made: 6 May 1656. Proved: 24 Jan 1656/57 York Co., VA.

  • To my daughter Elizabeth...
  • To my wife Mary...
  • To my sons James, Edward, and Augustine...

From this we can see that Isabella was the sister of James Miller (d. 1678) and the daughter of another James Miller (d. 1657). I suspect that the whole Warner theory was aroused by the fact that she had a brother, Augustine Miller.

Curator's Note: Conflicting versions of who her father was--either Warner or Miller. Documentation is needed. (Found in Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Volumes 1-2, p. 285, will of James Miller (d. 1678) - names sister "Mrs. Isabella Lewis, wife to Major John Lewis".)

[Part of the problem is that she was christened "Elizabeth", but for some reason everyone called her "Isabella".] Note: Elizabeth "Isabella" Miller was the YOUNGER of two sisters.

[Another part of the problem is that John Lewis of "Chemokins" married Elizabeth/Isabella MILLER, and his son, "Councillor" John Lewis, married Elizabeth WARNER. Careless genealogists hashed them up.]

Hi! I don't have a copy of the "old family history", have just seen it quoted. This is what I have on John & William.

John Lewis was the immigrant. He and his wife, probably Elizabeth MNU, arrived Virginia by 1673. It is believed they came from Wales. He is found on the 1679 Tythables for Turkey Creek,Henrico County, Va. with 3 tythables. His will was filed in Henrico County in 1689.His wife had already remarried at the time of probate. No further trace of his wife is found after the settlement of his estate. NOTE:I think it is possible she was a second wife, based on the fact William was made admin. of his father's estate and guardian for is sister, Sarah.

Henrico County Records:01 Dec 1689 I, Robert Woodson acknowledge to my brother-in-law, William Lewis, my full share due my wife Sarah, one of the Orphans of John Lewis.

William Lewis was born abt 1660 in Henrico Co., Va. or possibly Wales. He married Elizabeth Woodson c1680-90 in Henrico County, Va.He is found in the Henrico County records settling the estate of his father,as well as purchasing land during this time. While no record is found of his marriage, it is proven by a settlement of land on William's sons, Joseph and William, by Robert Woodson, Jr. In this settlement the boys are listed as Robert's grandsons.William also appears as a witness at one of the first Quaker weddings in Henrico County. His will can be found in the Henrico County records. It was an oral will witnessed by his brother-in-law, George Payne.
