'Elizabeth Quimby
Elizabeth Osgood is the daughter of William and Elizabeth Osgood. Her father was a millwright in Salisbury, Massachusetts. A full account of the Osgood family appears in the "New England Family History", page 74. Before 1657, Elizabeth married Robert Quinby, a ship carpenter, who migrated to Salem, Massachusetts around 1638. On February 28, 1658, Robert bought a house and ten acres in Salisbury, for sixteen pounds. It was located on the west side of the Powwow river, bounded by land of William Sargent, a lane, street and highway. Her father went on the bond to pay the purchase price.
Robert and Elizabeth had the following children:
- Lydia Quinby, born at Salisbury, November 22, 1657-8, married on April 10, 1674 to William Holdridge
- William Quinby, born April 11, 1660,
- John Quinby, born September 7, 1665;
- Thomas Quinby, born February 8, 1668, at Salisbury, was mentioned in the will of his grandfather, William Osgood.
- Elizabeth Quinby, born October 17, 1670, at Amesbury;
- Philip Quinby, born March 1, 1672-3, at Amesbury, was living in 1700, but is not known to have married;
- Jospeh Quinby, born March 6, 1676, at Amesbury
Elizabeth's parents had the notorious Indian "Symon" living with them, who subsequently wounded Elizabeth and killed her husband, Robert in the Amesbury massacre of July 7, 1677 A complete copy of the "Symon Indian Letter" detailing the massacre is available beginning on page 68 of "Genealogical History of the Quinby (Quimby) Family in England and America", Henry Cole Quinby Tuttle Company, 1915
On the 7 July 1677, the Indians descended upon Amesbury, massacreing a number of the citizens. Elizabeth (Osgood) Quinby, wife of Robert, was severely wounded, but recovered. Her testimony in an original letter, from three men of Amesbury, preserved in the Massachusetts Archives, (vol 69, pp. 141-42) gives an account of the affair. The words in parentheses are crossed out in the original.
