Marriage

A marriage record has not been identified for Elizabeth Levington, here treated, although her daughter Isabella is reported to have been the daughter of Levington of Saltcoats, The Scots Peerage IV: 258 and it is supposed, therefore, than Elizabeth Levington, here treated, married the Laird of Saltcoats, presumed to be a member of the same family.

Please note that the lands belonging to Levington of Saltcoats are located in East Lothian, formerly Haddingtonshire. The Levington family have no connection with Saltcoats in Ayrshire.

7 March 1502: On the seventh day of the month of March, the year of the Lord a thousand five hundred and two, at the fourth hour after noon, Robert Rynd, burgess of Edinburgh, resigned in the hands of Thomas Carkettil, one of the bailies of the said burgh, an annualrent of ten merks usual money of Scotland, to be uplifted yearly from the tenement of land of the late Bartholomew Carnys, lying in the said burgh, near the Over Bow of the same, between the land of the late John Carnys, father of the said Bartholomew, on the south, and the land of the late William Bel, on the north : the which bailie gave seizin and conjunct infeftment of the said annualrent , by the exhibition of a penny, to a noble lord, William, Lord Ruven, and to Henry Levington, attorney, and in name of a noble Lady, Isabella, spouse of the said Lord, in conjunct fee, conform to the tenor of the charter thereof made to them. 23 March [1502]: On the 23rd day of March, the third hour after noon, Thomas Carkettil, bailie of Edinburgh, by virtue of precept of seizin of the royal chancery, directed to him after retour, gave seizin to Henry Levington, attorney, and in name of a noble lady, Isobella Lady Ruthven, daughter and heir of the late Elizabeth Levington, her mother, of an annual rent of eleven merks six shillings and eight pennies usual money of Scotland, to be uplifted yearly from the land, as well fore and back, which formerly belonged to Bartholomew of Karnys, lying in the said burgh, in the Over Bow thereof, on the west side of the King's street, between the land of the late John Karnis on the east, towards the south, and the land of the late William Bell on the west, towards the north. Please note that Isabella Levington, Lady Ruthven, has been misidentified as Elizabeth Levington in the NRS abstract of this charter. Please also note that Sir David Lindsay of Bewfurd is the son of Isabella Levington, afterwards the wife of William, Lord Ruthven.

14 April 1493: Retour of Inquest made in the tolbooth of the burgh of Hadingtone on 14 April 1483 in presence of Adam Johnneston, son and apparent heir of Sir Gilbert Johnneston of Elphinstone, knight, sheriff of Edinburgh and within the constabulary of Hadingtone, and James Douglas of Raufburne, deputes of the said Sir Gilbert, finding that William Keith was lawful and nearest heir of his father William, Earl Marescall, Lord of Keith, in the barony of Keith (O.E. and N.E. £60), and the office of marshall of the same, lying in the sheriffdom of Edinburgh and constabulary of Hadingtone; and that the said lands and office were held of the king and had been in non-entry since the death of the Earl about 2 months before the date of the inquest. 16 July 1538: Instrument of Sasine narrating that an honourable gentleman JOHN LEWEYNTON OF SALTCOTTS, passed to a waste tenement or site lying in the town and territory of Gullane, in the 'West raw' in the barony of Dirlton, in the constabulary of Haddington and sheriffdom of Edinburgh, between the lands of Henry Wilson on the west, of the lord of Dirlton on the east, and of the said JOHN LEWEYNTON on the north, and there gave sasine of the said waste tenement or site to John Littil and Jonet Forus, his spouse, their heirs etc. Witnesses: John Foular, Richard Thomsone, Hugh Browne, and JOHN LEWEYNTON son of the said JOHN LEWEYNTON OF SALTCOTTS.
