MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 0 It is not certain exactly when Elizabeth "Bettie" McCartney was born but it was about 1840. In census records, she gave her age as 10 in 1850, as 22 in 1860; she said she was 58 and born in Nov 1841 in 1900, and she said she was 69 in 1910. Her death certificate indicates she was age 78 yrs and 5 months (no number of days) when she died on September 29, 1917. So she might have been born in either April or November between the years 1838 and 1841.
Bettie married Harrison Lay late in life, on November 22, 1882. Although Bettie had not previously been married, Harrison had been married twice before and had children by both his first wives. He and Bettie had no children.
Harrison died in 1909 and Bettie appears on the 1916 Confederate Pensioners list in Lauderdale County, Alabama as the widow of Harrison Lay. Bettie died in 1917 intestate and her estate was settled in Lauderdale Co, AL. The settlement papers named a host of relatives living in Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, Mississipi and Missouri.
Although Bettie and Harrison's graves are not marked, according to their death certificates, Bettie was buried at McCartney Cemetery where her parents were buried, and her husband, Harrison Lay, was buried at Hurricane Cemetery just a couple of miles away. Although it is not known for a fact, Harrison was most likely buried next to his second wife, whose maiden name was Nancy Weathers. Nancy's parents and quite a few of her siblings were buried at Hurricane. Nancy probably died about 1881 but her grave is also unmarked.

Note: According to Joyce Cameron, jcameron57@mindspring.com, the person signing Elizabeth McCartney Lay's death certificate was a Dr. Belue who was related to Bettie's brother Robert by marriage. Dr. Belue crossed the "t's" in the name "Bettie" up above the loops of the "t's", which caused her name to be transcribed as "Billie" instead of "Bettie." Also, he had written "Granny McCartny" for Bettie's mother, which we can only assume was what the family called her. "Granny" was incorrectly transcribed as "Gracey." Bettie's mother's name was not Gracey but was instead Elizabeth Cloer McCartney.
