About Elizabeth Winspear Crapp

Elizabeth Winspear was christened at Glaisdale in Yorkshire, England on 3 October 1849. Her parents were William and Martha Winspear (née Watson). The family emigrated to Tasmania, Australia, in 1852 on board the 'Duke of Lancaster', but her father died of consumption on 20 May 1852 during the journey and was buried at sea. The ship arrived in Tasmania on 14 August 1852. At some stage Elizabeth was adopted by Rev. Joseph Tice Gellibrand who arrived in New Zealand from Tasmania, Australia, in 1877. She married Captain Arthur Algernon Crapp in Auckland on 28 February 1878 using the name Elizabeth Winspear Gellibrand (reg. 1878/135). Elizabeth Winspear Crapp died at the house of Mrs McCoy in Cameron Road, Tauranga, on 1 May 1894 at the age of 39. She was buried in Mission Cemetery | Ōtamataha Pā - biography by Debbie McCauley (2 March 2020).

FUNERAL. On Wednesday afternoon the remains of the late Mrs Crapp, wife of Capt. A. A. Crapp, of Omokoroa, were interred the Old Cemetery, Tauranga, in close proximity to the graves of her parents by adoption, Mr and Mrs Gellibrand, by whom she was regarded as a dear and only child. The sad procession left the house of Mrs McCoy, Cameron Road, (where death took place on Monday last), at 2. 30 p.m., a large gathering following to the cemetery both in carriages and on foot. A number of beautiful wreaths and flowers were laid on the coffin as it was deposited above the grave at the head of-which stood the Rev. T. Scott who read the touching service for the burial of the dead in a most impressive manner and afterwards offered up a prayer for the bereaved ones standing round the grave. At the conclusion of the service the assemblage stood bareheaded and silent for some minutes, in respectful sympathy, the calm, sunny brightness of the autumn afternoon forming a painful contrast to the chill scene of desolation and grief evidenced before their eyes, in the open grave containing that which was dearest in life to the widowed husband and motherless children placing their last tokens of lore therein.
