Ancestor of William Henry Harrison 9th US President Ancestor of Benjamin Harrison 23rd US President

Elizabeth "Betty" Landon was born 17 May 1683 at Credenhill, Herefordshire, England. She was a daughter of Thomas Landon and Mary De Laval.[1] She arrived in Virginia before 1699.

She married Mr. Willis as her first husband, and was shortly widowed. Her second marriage occurred between 9 Apr 1701 when a deed between Robert King Carter and Elizabeth (Landon) Willis indicated that a marriage was about to take place, and 30 Jan 1701, when a deed indicated that the marriage had taken place. Marriage Location - probably Lancaster County, possibly Middlesex County, Virginia.[2]

Family

Elizabeth married twice. She married first to Richard Willis after the death of his first wife, Ann, in 1698.[3] She married in 1701, as his second wife, Robert "King" Carter. He had a first marriage to to Judith Armistead (died 1699).[3][4] Elizabeth was the mother of the next ten of Robert Carter's children:[3]

  1. Anne Carter (1702–1743) married Benjamin Harrison IV; (parents of Benjamin Harrison V and grandparents of President William Henry Harrison).
  2. Robert Carter II (1704–1734) married Priscilla Churchill.
  3. Sarah Carter (~1705–1705)
  4. Betty Carter (~1705–1706)
  5. Charles Carter (1707–1764) married Anne Byrd, daughter of Col. William Byrd II.
  6. Ludlow Carter (born ~1709)
  7. Landon Carter (1710–1778) married Maria Byrd, daughter of Col. William Byrd II.
  8. Mary Carter (1712–1736) married George Braxton; (parents of Carter Braxton).
  9. Lucy Carter (1715–1763) married Henry Fitzhugh
  10. George Carter (1718–1742)[4]

Below is a direct quote of Berkeley's work:

By 1701, when the first of the extant letters was written by Robert Carter, he was already one of the most prominent men in the colony as a member of its council, and the significant events of the early portion of his life had occurred, including the death of his first wife in 1699 and his second marriage [in 1701] (to Elizabeth (Landon) Willis, by whom he would have ten children) in 1701. The letters dated between 1701 and 1710 included in this project reflect little of Carter's personal, political, and mercantile interests of that time because they are ones he wrote as one of the trustees of the children of his friend, Ralph Wormeley, and deal with their affairs rather than his own. There are a few that step outside his duties to his friend, and they show his interest in land acquisition, a topic that would occupy him all of the rest of his life[4]

Death and Legacy

Elizabeth died July 3, 1719 at Williamsburg, Independent Cities, Virginia and was buried at Old Christ Church, Lancaster County, Virginia. *Death 3 Jul 1719

"To the memory of Betty Carter, second wife of Robert Carter, Esq., youngest daughter of Thomas Landon, Esq., and Mary his wife, of Grednal, in the county of Hereford, the ancient seat of the family and place of her nativity. She bore to her husband ten children, five sons and five daughters, three of whom--Sarah, Betty, and Ludlow--died before her and are buried near her. She was a person of great and exemplary piety and charity in every relation wherein she stood: whether considered as a Christian, a wife, a mother, a mistress, a neighbour, or a friend, her conduct was equalled by few, excelled by none. She changed this life for a better on the 3d of July, 1710, in the 36th year of her age and 19th of her marriage. May her descendants make their mother's virtues and graces the pattern of their lives and actions!"
