Parents

Eleanor Hungerford was the daughter of Robert Hungerford, Knt., 2nd Lord Hungerford,[1][2] and Margaret Botreaux.[3][4] Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated at about 1435.[5]

The connection between the Hungerfords and Whites has been difficult to establish as Eleanor was not named in her father's will proved 7 July 1459[6] nor was she named in the will of her mother. The reason for the omission is probably because Eleanor was married by the time her parents died and had already received her inheritance. Also, Eleanor was not listed in the Hungerford pedigree in the Gloucestershire Visitations. The Hungerford/White connection was established in about 2000, when Douglas Richardson published the evidence that Eleanor, daughter of Robert, was the wife of John White in a series of lawsuits over Hungerford lands.[5][7][8]

At least five Hampshire manors passed from the Hungerfords to the White family while Eleanor was married to John White. These manors included Bodenham by Fareham, Pennington by Lymington, and Rockford Moyles, all in 1465, and Binstead Wyke and Binstead St. Clare (undated, but transferred before 1467). It is not certain, but it's probable that the Binstead Wyke and Binstead St. Clare properties could have been part of Eleanor's maritagium.[5]

Marriages and Children

Eleanor married four times. She married first to John White (or Whyte), Gent., son and heir of Robert White and Alice _____,[3] before 1455.[5] They had three sons and two daughters named as the children of John White in the 1463 will of John's father, Robert:[9]

5. Joan, not named by Richardson, but she was named in her paternal grandfather's 1467 will as a daughter of John White

John White died in 1469.[3][5]

Eleanor married second, shortly before 30 June 1470, to William Tyrrell "the younger", Knt., son and heir of Sir Thomas Tyrrell and Anne Marney. Eleanor was William's second wife.[3][5] William was killed at the Battle of Barnet on 14 April 1471.[5]

Eleanor married third, before 1475, to Henry FitzLewis, Knt., younger son of Sir Lewis John and his first wife, Alice de Vere. Eleanor was his second wife. They had no issue. Sir Henry FitzLewis died in 1480.[3][5][10]

Eleanor married fourth, as his second wife, to Thomas Garth (or Garthe), Esq.[3][11]

Death

According to the Calendar of Fine Rolls, Eleanor died sometime between 1480-1483, when a writ of diem clausit extremum was directed for "Eleanor Garth late the wife of Henry Lowys knight; Surrey; Southampton and Wilts; Kent." Issuance date of writ: 2 August 1483.[12] She was buried at New Abbey, London.[3]

In 1489, her husband remarried to Margaret (or Margery) Lewknor, widow of John Wood. Her husband Thomas died leaving a will proved 8 August 1505.[3]
Research Notes

Unsourced Child

No sources have been found to indicate that Eleanor and John White had a son named Thomas White. Thomas' profile has been detached as their son.

Apparently she spelled her name "Alianor", leading to the "Eleanor/Alice" confusion.

Eleanor - After the death of John White, she (may have) remarried twice: about 1470, to a Sir William Tyrrell (but not the one who was killed at Barnet); and - newly discovered - before 1475, to Sir Henry Fitz Lewis, Knt., of Bromfords in Newendon, Essex and London.

Documentation has been found to prove the second assertion, but not the first. There is still no evidence that she was ever married to any Tyrell - and clear evidence that she could not have married the one who was killed at Barnet (because his actual wife, Eleanor Darcy, survived him).

The problematic generation is that of John White (died 146?), of Farnham,
Surrey, gentleman, whose wife is given in various secondary sources as Alice Hungerford. That her given name was Eleanor, not Alice, is proved by a series of newly discovered Chancery suits in which Eleanor, "late the wife of John White, of Farnham," sued John Yong, knight, of London and Sir Richard Newbrigge, clerk in Chancery, over various White family manors in Hampshire: (Footnote 4: "List of Early Chancery Proceedings" (PRO, London, 10 vols. (1901-1936)), Lists and Indexes, No. 16: 160 (citing Bundle 48, No. 470), and 184 (citing Bundle 52, No. 43.))

In the period, 1473-1475, Sir Henry Fitz Lowys, knight, and Eleanor, his wife, late wife of John White, of Farnham, sued John Yong, of London, knight, and Sir Richard Newbrigge, clerk, feoffees, in Chancery regarding "the manor of Rokeford Moyles alias Moyles Court, and the moiety of the manor of Bodenham, Hampshire.

In the period, 1475-1480, or 1483-1485, Robert Whyte, son of John, son of Robert Whyte, late of Farneham, sued Richard Newbrugge, clerk, feoffee to uses, in Chancery, regarding the "manor of Penyngton near Lymington, Hampshire, late of Margaret Hungerford, lady Botrewex (Botreaux)." Harry FitzLowys, knight, and Alianor, his wife, late the wife of John White, son of the said Robert, the grandfather, sued the same individual in Chancery regarding the same property. Robert, son of John, son of Robert white, late of Farneham also sued John Yonge, knight, and Richard Newebrigge, feoffees to uses, in Chancery regarding the "manor of Rokford Moyles, a moiety of the manor of Bedenham, Hampshire," and the "manor of Padnyndene and a messuage in Guilford, Surrey." Richard, son of John, son of Robert Whyte sued the same individuals regarding the same property, "and the manor of Penyngton." Harry FitzLowys, knight, and Alianor, his wife, late the wife of John White, son of the said Robert, the grandfather, sued the same individuals for "Rokford Moyles and Bedenham." John Yonge, esquire, son of Agnes, daughter of Robert White, sued the same individuals for "Rokford Moyles, Bedenham and Penyngton."

That Eleanor's maiden name was Hungerford is attested by two heraldic visitations. The Hampshire visitation states that John White's wife was "Alice d(aughter) of Rob(ert) lord Hungerford." (Footnote 5: William Harry Rylands, ed., "Pedigrees from the Visitation of Hampshire," Harleian Society Publications, 64 (London, 1913): 81-83. The various visitations (1530, 1575, and/or 1622-34) are combined into single pedigrees, making it impossible to determine the date supporting any particular statement.) while the Essex visitation states that John White's wife was "Ellenor d(aughter) of Rob(ert) lord Hungerford. (Footnote 6: "The Visitations of Essex," Harleian Society Publications, 14 (London, 1879): 618.)

Also found the source of the death date confusion - it seems she had a niece of very similar name who died quite young.
